{"id":21897,"date":"2019-04-29T05:31:54","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T05:31:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=21897"},"modified":"2019-11-25T12:47:46","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T11:47:46","slug":"greenpeace-norway-protest-oil-rig-bound-for-arctic-drilling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/21897\/greenpeace-norway-protest-oil-rig-bound-for-arctic-drilling\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Norway protest oil rig bound for Arctic drilling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rypefjord, Norway &#8211; Four peaceful activists from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climbed the oil rig<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> West Hercules<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located near <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rypefjord<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> village in the north of Norway to protest against drilling for oil in the Arctic. &nbsp;While a growing movement calling for real action on climate change is happening all over the world, Equinor&#8217;s rig is preparing for a season of oil drilling in the Arctic waters of the Barents Sea. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drilling is licensed by the Norwegian government but under scrutiny from a constitutional lawsuit to end Arctic oil drilling in Norway.[1]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace activist Karianne Andersen said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDesperate times call for desperate measures. That\u2019s why I\u2019m here, doing whatever I can to tell the Norwegian government that if we want to keep our planet livable for the generations to come, we need to phase out the oil industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrilling for oil in the Arctic while the region melts faster than ever is complete madness. We face a climate emergency and need to stop oil drilling, and that\u2019s why we are peacefully protesting today,\u201d added Greenpeace Norway head, Frode Pleym.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace Norway\u2019s protest on the oil rig comes mere weeks after tens of thousands of young people across the country took part in school strikes to call for climate action. A key demand of the striking youth is an end to new oil and gas exploration in Norway. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dagsavisen.no\/innenriks\/et-tydelig-generasjonsskille-1.1255391\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also proved that, for the first time, a majority of Norwegians under the age of 24 are in favour of leaving oil in the ground because of the climate crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYoung people in Norway are asking for an end to oil. Now it&#8217;s high time for the government to listen and follow through,\u201d said Haldis Helle, vice chair of the Norwegian youth NGO Nature and Youth and taking part in the protest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil is Norway\u2019s biggest export, and it is burned all over the world.[2] This makes Norway the 7th biggest exporter of climate-wrecking emissions on the planet.[3] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOil is one of the biggest threats to the climate and the Paris Agreement, which Norway has signed to help keep global temperatures below 1.5 and avoid climate catastrophe. Norway needs to be a frontrunner when it comes to stopping the search for new oil, and this is not the way to do it. Together with Nature and Youth, Greenpeace has sued the Norwegian state for opening up these licenses, and we believe it is in breach with the Norwegian Constitution, \u00a7 112, which defines the state\u2019s obligation to secure future generations a sustainable environment.
