{"id":22188,"date":"2019-06-05T03:15:29","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T01:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=22188"},"modified":"2019-11-06T09:47:20","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:47:20","slug":"air-pollution-health-world-environment-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/22188\/air-pollution-health-world-environment-day\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Clean air isn\u2019t a luxury, it\u2019s a basic human right\u2019 &#8211; Greenpeace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hong Kong &#8211; This World Environment Day we face the reality that more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/detail\/02-05-2018-9-out-of-10-people-worldwide-breathe-polluted-air-but-more-countries-are-taking-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 out of 10 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> globally are breathing unsafe air. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Clean air isn\u2019t a luxury, it\u2019s a basic human right. It\u2019s not acceptable that so many people around the world are being forced to breathe polluted, toxic air. More and more people are having to deal with the terrible health impacts and they\u2019ve had enough &#8211; they\u2019re rising up and demanding solutions,\u201d said Greenpeace International Executive Director Jennifer Morgan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a public health crisis we can fix by transitioning away from polluting fossil fuels to renewable energy and investing in clean transport. This transformation is already underway in some countries &#8211; it\u2019s not a technological challenge but a political one.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coal burning is the number one source of air pollution worldwide. In China alone, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/endcoal.org\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately 670,000 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> die each year due to air pollution from coal combustion, and in India the figure is estimated as between 80,000 and 115,000.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Europe and the United States air pollution from coal burning kills 23,300 and 13,200 people per year, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The transport sector is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/sustainable-development\/transport\/health-risks\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing faster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than any other climate emissions source, with the world\u2019s car fleet predicted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/explore-topics\/transport\/what-we-do\/global-fuel-economy-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to triple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2050. The transport sector is responsible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/sustainable-development\/transport\/health-risks\/air-pollution\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 70% of particulate emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some areas, and for up to 30% of particulate emissions in Europe. In Korea, vehicles are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.me.go.kr\/home\/web\/policy_data\/read.do?menuId=10262&amp;seq=7053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the biggest source of air pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Seoul metropolitan area, accounting for 27% of total particulate emissions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In China, the host of this year\u2019s UN World Environment Day event, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aqli.epic.uchicago.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/AQLI-Annual-Report-V13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">air pollution shortens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lives by an average of three years. But while China records dangerously high air pollution levels, it has also seen some of the most dramatic progress. Levels of hazardous PM2.5 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mee.gov.cn\/gzfw_13107\/hjtj\/hjtjnb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell by 35%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2013 and 2017 as a result of strict air pollution policies and a flatlining of coal consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;While its war on pollution is far from over, China\u2019s progress on reducing pollution shows the scale of action that is possible if there is genuine will at leadership level. Air pollution creeps across borders and knows no national boundaries.
