The attention to period detail is eye-popping: from the horn-rimmed glasses, pastel-toned clothes, authentic street signs and transportation, to the volunteers\u2019 self-sacrifice and the total lack of local residents understanding about the magnitude of the events unfolding around them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was an event never before seen in the history of mankind, impeccably reproduced for television audiences. But for many of us, the Chornobyl catastrophe is not history. The disaster itself continues, and its effects can still be felt today.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/06\/6c532595-chernobyl-season-1-hbo-series-all-cmyk.jpg\" title=\"Chornobyl HBO Series graphic\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/06\/6c532595-chernobyl-season-1-hbo-series-all-cmyk.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/06\/6c532595-chernobyl-season-1-hbo-series-all-cmyk-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/06\/6c532595-chernobyl-season-1-hbo-series-all-cmyk-510x329.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption><div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Liam Daniel\/Sky UK Ltd\/HBO<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost <\/span>350,000 locals<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were evacuated after the accident.&nbsp; Today, approximately <\/span>5 million people <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still live in areas which are <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/Global\/international\/publications\/nuclear\/2016\/Nuclear_Scars.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">officially designated \u2018contaminated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019. The lingering effects of Chornobyl are expected to cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/news\/releases\/2006\/pr20\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9,000 more deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to conservative estimates by the World Health Organisation. <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/nuclear-fuel-cycle\/nuclear-power-reactors\/appendices\/rbmk-reactors.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Ten&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reactors of the same type used at Chornobyl are still currently in operation across Russia; from Leningrad to Smolensk to Kursk.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are difficulties with accurately estimating the loss of life caused by Chornobyl, due to the limitations of the initial data, and inaccurately low estimates about both internal and external exposure. Internal exposure is what enters the body through eating or breathing, and is much harder to track and evaluate than external exposure. A single particle of radioactive material inside a lung can remain there indefinitely. This can cause serious risks to health.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Greenpeace&nbsp;<\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/en\/news\/features\/chernobyl-deaths-180406\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number of deaths from cancers caused by Chornobyl is closer to 100,000. While cancer has other causes than just radiation, these causes have, according to scientific estimates, been triggered, spread and exacerbated by the radiation from Chornobyl. &nbsp;With people today still living in contaminated areas, receiving further doses of radiation, this number will continue to rise.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why are we still eating radioactive mushrooms and berries, and why are we still building new nuclear power stations?<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016 I was in Novozybkov, a town of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Believers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Old Believers<\/a> in the south of the Bryansk region.&nbsp; Shortly after the disaster, the town\u2019s residents were going to be relocated, but at the beginning of the 90s \u2013 with the economic crisis affecting decisions \u2013 plans for the town were limited to decontamination.&nbsp; Greenpeace <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/Global\/international\/publications\/nuclear\/2016\/Nuclear_Scars.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took samples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Novozybkov, and other villages of the Bryansk region.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the warnings, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people quickly began to pick mushrooms and berries in the forest again, to keep cattle, to collect game \u2013 all of which were radioactive.\u00a0 Most alarmingly, these products \u2013 Chornobyl berries and mushrooms \u2013 are sold to other regions; no-one is immune from radioactive products getting into their homes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is hard to imagine any other area of human activity where one mistake can have such large-scale, long-lasting consequences.&nbsp; The high price for atomic power is paid not by governments, nor by companies, but by ordinary people, who pay the cost, generation after generation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many of us, the Chornobyl catastrophe is not history.
