{"id":23486,"date":"2019-07-31T01:05:43","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T23:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=23486"},"modified":"2021-12-01T13:50:00","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:50:00","slug":"even-the-bermuda-triangle-has-a-plastic-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/23486\/even-the-bermuda-triangle-has-a-plastic-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Even the Bermuda Triangle has a plastic problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This month we\u2019re headed to a special place in the center of the Bermuda Triangle called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/sargassosea.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sargasso Sea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 It has some of the clearest ocean water on the planet and supports a spectacular array of life \u2013 much of it found nowhere else on Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/2AKH92npU6M\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"2AKH92npU6M\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, today the Sargasso has a big problem, and that problem is plastic.\u00a0 Just like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great Pacific Garbage Patch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Sargasso sits inside a gyre.\u00a0 This means it\u2019s surrounded by ocean currents &#8211; like the Gulf Stream &#8211; moving in a circle that pushes things inward.\u00a0 Think of it like the center of a whirlpool. You\u2019ve probably heard that from us a million times, right?\u00a0 But what might be new to you is that we\u2019re not only working on solutions to address the plastic crisis on land, we\u2019re also working to help the ocean cope with the crisis. The solution we&#8217;re proposing is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/protect-the-oceans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create ocean sanctuaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We\u2019re going to gather scientific evidence to support why the Sargasso Sea is so special that it should be protected under a new Global Ocean Treaty currently under consideration at the United Nations.\u00a0 We think the Sargasso should be one of the first ocean sanctuaries created under this new treaty \u2013 particularly because of the impact that plastics are having here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how does this work?\u00a0 Sanctuaries and treaties don\u2019t stop ocean currents from carrying plastic&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, have you ever had the flu?\u00a0 I have. The worst thing you can do when you\u2019re sick is to do things that further stress your system out. You wouldn\u2019t do anything that makes you sicker.
