A full week devoted to one of our favorite sea creatures &#8211; and one of the most misunderstood.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are five facts you might not know about sharks: <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1)<\/b> <b>Sharks have inhabited planet Earth for approximately <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.supportoursharks.com\/en\/Education\/Biology\/Evolution.htm\"><b>400 million years<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"769\" title=\"Whale Shark in Pacific Waters\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/c640b2d4-gp03tnt.jpg\" alt=\"A whale shark swims in the warm water off the coast of the Philippines. According to the Australian government, around 66% of whales and other toothed cetaceans die as a result of botched attempts to use whale sharks as lures for tuna.  Greenpeace is campaigning to stop the use of \u2018fishing aggregating devices\u2019 (FADs) in Pacific waters. These floating devices are left in the water by fishing vessels to attract tuna. In total, sharks have survived five mass extinctions. <br><br>And scientists are still discovering new sharks all the time.<br><br>In just the last three decades, scientists have identified nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/conversation-sharkweek-without-mentioning-shark-bites\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">250 new shark species<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The latest is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/21\/us\/new-shark-species-bioluminescent-trnd\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Pocket Shark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a shark smaller than the human hand that secretes glow-in-the-dark liquid from a gland near its front fins. They then enter the global shark trade, estimated at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/figis\/servlet\/SQServlet?file=\/usr\/local\/tomcat\/8.5.16\/figis\/webapps\/figis\/temp\/hqp_123220585038921019.xml&amp;outtype=html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as high as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> US$1 billion per year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June, Greenpeace <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/22754\/thousands-of-endangered-sharks-slaughtered-by-overfishing-new-report-reveals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fishing vessels in the North Atlantic were catching as many as 25,000 mako sharks each year. For this reason, deep sea species such as gulper sharks, basking sharks and tope sharks are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/x3690e\/x3690e0r.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">targeted for<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their liver oil.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>4) There might be shark in your moisturizer<\/b><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" title=\"Sharks at Fishing Port in Thailand\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/2100fdcd-gp0stqcoy.jpg\" alt=\"Juvenile sharks on sale at the public fishing port in Ranong, southern Thailand. The transfer of tuna, tuna-like species and sharks onto reefers through transshipment at sea is prohibited by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).\" class=\"wp-image-23618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/2100fdcd-gp0stqcoy.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/2100fdcd-gp0stqcoy-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/2100fdcd-gp0stqcoy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/2100fdcd-gp0stqcoy-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/2100fdcd-gp0stqcoy-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption aria-hidden=\"true\">Juvenile sharks on sale at the public fishing port in Ranong, southern Thailand.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Chanklang  Kanthong \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Squalene, a derivative of shark liver oil, is a popular ingredient in moisturizers, sunscreens and other cosmetic products. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although squalene can also be extracted from plants, shark oil is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/2018\/07\/sharks-news-cosmetics-squalene-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often a cheaper <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">option. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the toll on shark populations is severe. Research shows that producing one tonne of squalene requires liver oil from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etcgroup.org\/files\/ETC-squalane-synbio-casestudy2014.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as many as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3,000 sharks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>5) It\u2019s a systemic problem<\/b><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"808\" title=\"Shark Fins on Fishing Vessel in the Pacific Ocean\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/08\/178843ec-gp0stq37p.jpg\" alt=\"Shark fins found in the freezer of the Shuen De Ching No.888. In total there were sacks containing 75 kilograms of shark fins from at least 42 sharks. This leaves sharks and countless other marine animals at risk.&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that governments are starting work on a global oceans treaty that has the potential to protect nearly a third of the high seas and would help shark populations to recover.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a lot depends on whether we speak up.
