Ford, General Motors and Fiat-Chrysler have the largest carbon footprint per vehicle <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to car sales in the U.S. being dominated by large SUVs and pickup trucks (if you need any convincing that SUVs are one of the climate\u2019s worst nightmares, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/24107\/bigger-is-not-better-how-suvs-are-killing-the-climate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read more here)<\/span><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mk.co.kr\/news\/business\/view\/2019\/08\/654032\/\">Hyundai-Kia&#8217;s plan<\/a> to aggressively increase the proportion of SUVs in its product portfolio will inevitably lead to higher CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s be real: automakers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like VW, Renault-Nissan and others on the list <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/23992\/how-car-companies-are-speeding-us-towards-a-climate-crash-and-what-we-can-do-to-stop-them\/\">are driving climate change<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019re not doing remotely enough to join us in moving towards a liveable \u2014 and breathable \u2014 future. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These companies have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/may\/28\/dieselgate-33m-polluting-cars-still-on-eu-roads\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploited loopholes,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> manipulated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/may\/28\/dieselgate-33m-polluting-cars-still-on-eu-roads\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and installed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/may\/28\/dieselgate-33m-polluting-cars-still-on-eu-roads\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their products to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-34324772\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheat regulation <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tests while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40497293\/automakers-say-theyre-going-electric-but-theyre-also-lobbying-for-weaker-fuel-standards\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lobbying against<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strong climate regulation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and failing to market shared or electric vehicles in any meaningful way.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s most infuriating about the car industry is its complete unwillingness to address the climate emergency they helped create and accelerate. They are totally failing in the transition away from diesel and petrol cars. That means improving and extending public transport and creating networks run on renewable energy, investing in cycling and walking infrastructure, and increasing the safe uptake of micro-mobility solutions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not just up to policymakers. The car industry needs to up its game, and phase out all diesel and petrol cars (yes, even hybrids). We want to see an end to new car sales by 2028<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and instead have car manufacturers producing vehicles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are smaller, lighter, more energy-efficient and electric.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why we\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaa-demo.de\/english\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Motor Show in Frankfurt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this week \u2014 the largest car show in the world \u2014 to send a message to the industry directly. On September 14th, they\u2019ll be met by thousands of protesters from all over, cycling, walking, and demonstrating for a climate-friendly future.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>Wanna join in?
