{"id":24261,"date":"2019-09-12T21:51:16","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T19:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=24261"},"modified":"2021-12-01T13:49:46","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:49:46","slug":"22-activists-are-blocking-the-largest-oil-export-facility-in-the-us-images-from-above","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/24261\/22-activists-are-blocking-the-largest-oil-export-facility-in-the-us-images-from-above\/","title":{"rendered":"22 activists are blocking the largest oil export facility in the US \u2014 images from above"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The busiest oil shipping channel in the United States has been shut down by 22 Greenpeace USA activists in a peaceful protest<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/24251\/greenpeace-climbers-block-busiest-oil-export-channel-in-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Fred Hartman Bridge in Baytown, Texas, United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each day, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/business\/energy\/article\/Houston-leads-as-Texas-ships-out-80-of-nation-s-13696641.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 700,000 barrels of oil pass through the channel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and should the fossil fuel industry have its way, this number will increase to at least 2 million. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climbers suspended from the bridge plan to stay in place for 24 hours to challenge business as usual for the fossil fuel industry.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dramatic video and images from the peaceful protest capture the urgency needed to combat our global climate crisis.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"width: 1920px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-24261-1\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/09\/Houston_clip.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/09\/Houston_clip.mp4\">https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/09\/Houston_clip.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m here because we are in the middle of a climate emergency. We need our leadership to take bold action. I want to show people that we have power to pressure our politicians and change our system. We know there\u2019s a better world out there, but we have to demand it. It\u2019s a privilege to be able to do this action. In a time when people feel hopeless and they don\u2019t know what else to do, I am putting my body on the line. It\u2019s scary but I fear the climate crisis more than anything. I see so many communities hurting because of the fossil fuel industry,&#8221; said Greenpeace USA Activist Irene Kim, one of the 22 activists blocking the Houston Ship Channel.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are running out of time to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis. We can either take the bold measures required to stave off climate catastrophe today, or face the radical impacts of climate change tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
