But the vision that\u2019s been sold to us via Hollywood and the car industry is not sustainable. It\u2019s high energy, individualised and profit-driven. Activists came to Frankfurt to demand that the car industry stop driving climate change and illustrate what a climate-friendly future of transport looks like.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ours is a different future. One that\u2019s far more exciting (and liberating) than anything we\u2019ve seen from the car industry thus far.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-facebook wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-facebook\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.facebook.com\/greenpeace.international\/videos\/585692811838953\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>More walking<\/b><\/h4>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking has been with us since humans first learned to&#8230;you get the idea. Car-free zones and pedestrianised areas have transformed shopping districts and town centres from New York to York. London is planning to become the \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/press-releases\/mayoral\/mayor-launches-londons-first-ever-walking-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world\u2019s most walkable city<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 by improving signage and reconfiguring pedestrian crossings to give people shorter waits and longer crossing times when they cross the road.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking isn\u2019t for everyone all the time. But by making walking more attractive and easier, cities can cut congestion, improve air quality and encourage more activity in people\u2019s lives. So many trips we take are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/content\/national-household-travel-survey-short-trips-analysis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under 2 miles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (3.2kms). 42% of people agreed that they could just as easily walk these as drive them. There\u2019s so much potential for walking!<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>More cycling<\/b><\/h4>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cycling is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/content.tfl.gov.uk\/segregated-cycling-infrastructure-evidence-pack.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">great for cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the people who live there. In Copenhagen, 62% of people now cycle to their place of work or study. These systems need to be built to last, with easy, low-energy mechanisms to keep batteries charged up. And it\u2019s a form of a social safety net as it liberates people on lower incomes from the cost of owning and maintaining a car.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cities like Moscow and Beijing have public transport networks that are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/11\/reader-center\/international-public-transit-new-york-subway.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so good they are famous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for it. And other cities are catching up. Auckland in New Zealand recently revamped its bus network with faster, easier connections and is now on track to double its bus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greaterauckland.org.nz\/2019\/03\/27\/at-celebrates-new-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passenger numbers within a decade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Something no other city has done!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Fewer cars<\/b><\/h4>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cars are everywhere in cities today. And it will also free up space. Loads of it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parking takes up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.de\/sites\/www.greenpeace.de\/files\/publications\/living.moving.breathing.20180604.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 square miles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (517km<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of Los Angeles. That\u2019s enough to fit in a city the size of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/population\/largest-cities-in-the-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine what we could do without car parks; we could build more green space, more shops, more restaurants. The choices are endless.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But cars will not disappear. We will need them for some journeys &#8211; particularly those of us with additional needs. For these, will need car clubs; cars that we rent per minute, and share with everyone. These cars will be electric, and small, to make sure they sip energy rather than guzzle it. This phenomenon has been repeated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@chrisjagers\/where-will-all-the-traffic-go-68648bc111ae\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When presented with an opportunity, we\u2019re actually quite happy to adjust our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Re-configuring our cities away from car-use benefits everyone. And in the face of a climate emergency, we can\u2019t delay. We need to give people options to move away from cars. And we need to stop car manufacturers producing the petrol and diesel engines that are cooking the climate and polluting our cities. Clean, reliable and shared. That\u2019s the future of transport.
