We urgently need more sustainable and equitable ways of powering our societies and maintaining prosperous economies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace is working alongside local communities in multiple countries to achieve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplevsoil.org\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a world beyond oil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (And not just oil: Greenpeace organizations are working in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/24151\/climate-crisis-greenpeace-activists-detained-stop-coal-shipment-in-poland\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/7165\/greenpeace-africa-presents-roadmap-for-a-stumbling-eskom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, to call for a phase out of dirty coal, too).<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking on the very powerful fossil fuel industry is no easy task. Just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/b8f65cb373b1b7b15feb-c70d8ead6ced550b4d987d7c03fcdd1d.ssl.cf3.rackcdn.com\/cms\/reports\/documents\/000\/002\/327\/original\/Carbon-Majors-Report-2017.pdf?1499691240\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been found to be the source of more than 70% of the world\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. For them, the stakes are high. In September, Greenpeace activists and representatives from climate-impacted communities <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/philippines\/press\/3394\/community-reps-greenpeace-activists-blockade-shell-facility-in-batangas-to-call-for-climate-justice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blockaded a Shell refinery in Batangas City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Filipinos have also successfully petitioned the Philippines\u2019 Commission on Human Rights to launch a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/philippines\/press\/3374\/worlds-first-climate-change-and-human-rights-liability-inquiry-nears-closure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">landmark investigation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into 47 major fossil fuel producers\u2019 responsibility for climate-related human rights abuses following 2013\u2019s Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which claimed the lives of more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-philippines-typhoon-anniversary\/philippines-remembers-thousands-killed-a-year-after-typhoon-haiyan-idUSKBN0IS04820141108\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6,300 people and affected millions more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Taking action alongside grassroots groups, Greenpeace USA has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engage.us.greenpeace.org\/onlineactions\/ZPzl8kBgWU2_bABYTQWGqw2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposed new pipelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, blocked the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/breaking-greenpeace-climbers-block-houston-ship-channel-halting-oil-industry-operations-ahead-of-democratic-debate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest fossil fuel thoroughfare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country, and stood up against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/meet-the-brave-activists-who-shut-down-the-largest-fossil-fuel-ship-channel-in-the-us-for-18-hours\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unjust, anti-protest laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pushed forward by oil companies. The Bight is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/may\/07\/impending-blight-how-statoils-plans-threaten-the-great-australian-bight\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breeding ground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for endangered southern right whales and contains the Great Southern Reef, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/drilling-for-oil-in-the-great-australian-bight-would-be-disastrous-for-marine-life-and-the-local-community-116288\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85% of whose animals can\u2019t be found anywhere else<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world. Exploratory seismic blasting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/news\/seismic-blasting-reprieve-welcome-but-the-whales-of-the-great-australian-bight-wont-be-safe-until-drilling-is-permanently-banned\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was suspended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in August and respected Elders and Nobel Laureates<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/news\/ocean-elders-call-on-bill-shorten-and-scott-morrison-to-protect-great-australian-bight-from-oil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have called on<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Australia\u2019s government to place a permanent ban on oil exploration in the area. The Amazon Reef is threatened by oil companies that want to drill near their location.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Kamila Oliveira \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/apr\/22\/huge-coral-reef-discovered-at-amazon-river-mouth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> incredible reef <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was discovered at the mouth of the Amazon River between Brazil and French Guiana, it was clear to us that it had to be protected. French company Total was interested in drilling for oil, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/19833\/2-million-people-defended-the-amazon-reef-and-won\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took action and Brazil\u2019s government denied Total\u2019s license. But now, even after this historic win, another oil company (BP) wants to open up a new oil frontier in the region and the new Brazilian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epbr.com.br\/bp-pede-suspensao-de-projeto-na-foz-do-amazonas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government has said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s \u201cnot impossible\u201d for BP to get a drilling license. Greenpeace is campaigning to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/defend-the-amazon-reef\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protect the reef<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from oil development.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Germany<\/b><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1199\" height=\"800\" title=\"#aussteigen Demonstration and Bike Ride in Frankfurt am Main\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/10\/2f066877-gp0sttvd3.jpg\" alt=\"Under the motto &quot;Get out of the Combustion Engine - Traffic Turnaround Now!&quot; more than 20.000 people are protesting in Frankfurt. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/24286\/international-motor-show-demand-phase-out-internal-combustion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25,000 people participated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including 18,000 on bikes!), highlighting the role of the car industry in driving the climate emergency, including by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.de\/sites\/www.greenpeace.de\/files\/publications\/gp_cleanairnow_carindustryreport_full_v5_0919_72ppi_0.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lobbying against regulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Europe, Greenpeace is calling on automakers to phase out diesel and gas cars by 2028 and for governments to invest in renewable-powered public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Russia<\/b><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" title=\"Indigenous People Oppose Oil Drilling on Reindeer Herder Day in Siberia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/10\/7245f598-gp0stt8x0.jpg\" alt=\"Fyodor Moldanov, a Numto native, is against oil drilling on the wetlands of Numto, near his home and reindeer pastures.   \nOn the 17th March 2019, a traditional reindeer herders holiday in Numto village, Siberia, people meet with Russian government representatives and the Russian oil company Surgutneftegas, as they oppose the oil company\u2019s plan to drill for oil in the area. \nAfter Surgutneftegas had declared their plans last January, to start three more oil drilling wells, without consulting the majority of the Nenets and Khanty people, a conflict escalated. A group of local people wrote an anonymous letter to the prosecutor office to state, declaring their firm opposition to oil drilling and that the industry had not consulted them. \nA press team also travels up to the village to document the meeting. Access to the village however is controlled by the oil company who formally owns all the privatized roads developed for drilling project infrastructures. People are finding it increasingly difficult to be able to tell their story to the press. According to a study of 50 countries <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/361\/6405\/851\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conducted by Stanford University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, Canadian oil is the fourth-most greenhouse gas (GHG) intensive in the world. Canada is also the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/eccc\/documents\/pdf\/cesindicators\/global-ghg-emissions\/2019\/global-GHG-emissions-en.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ninth-biggest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall emissions emitter. Greenpeace has joined the fight against pipelines that would increase tar sands production and bring the toxic oil to the Pacific coast, where it would be loaded onto export supertankers \u2014 the increased traffic of which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/reports\/tanker-superhighway\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatens marine ecosystems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including southern resident orca whales. Austrian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/what-is-omv-guide-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oil giant OMV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still holds 17 permits that, if exploited, would be catastrophic for the climate and risk disastrous oil spills in New Zealand\u2019s wild and pristine waters. Oil spills threaten the livelihoods of coastal communities, customary indigenous owners, delicate marine ecosystems, and the precious wildlife that lives in those waters. This past summer Greenpeace New Zealand activists, after a 10 hour climb on the OMV headquarters in Wellington, put out a call to New Zealanders to join in a mass mobilisation at the same location three weeks later. Taking advantage of the melting ice to drill for more of the stuff that caused the problem in the first place not only goes against climate commitments, but also violates the Norwegian Constitution that says that the State shall ensure for everyone, including future generations, the right to a safe and healthy environment. That is why Greenpeace Nordic and Nature and Youth brought a case against the Norwegian Government. Oil is Norway\u2019s biggest export, and it is burned all over the world. This makes Norway the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/priceofoil.org\/2017\/08\/09\/new-report-norway-one-of-worlds-largest-emissions-exporters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7th biggest exporter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of climate-wrecking emissions on the planet. Greenpeace Nordic and Nature and Youth are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplevsoil.org\/en\/peoplevsoilstatements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appealing the judgement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their case against the Norwegian Government for Arctic oil drilling. Over the summer a 27,000 tonne oil rig off the coast of Scotland was moved into place and Greenpeace was there to make sure this behaviour would not go unnoticed. For five days three sets of Greenpeace UK climbers prevented BP\u2019s rig from leaving the Cromarty Firth in Scotland. This was followed by a further stand off in the North Sea between the rig and the Greenpeace International ship, the Arctic Sunrise, which prevented the rig from reaching the drill site. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/jun\/20\/greenpeace-north-sea-oil-protest-ends-with-climate-injunctions-for-bp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activists served \u2018People\u2019s Climate Injunctions\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to BP Headquarters in London and Aberdeen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.greenpeace.org.uk\/page\/s\/no-space-for-oil-ads?source=WB&amp;subsource=ECCLEMOAWB01GZ&amp;utm_source=gpeace&amp;utm_medium=WB&amp;utm_campaign=ECCLEMOAWB01GZ&amp;_ga=2.101606977.1140671837.1570796176-399317886.1569416147\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calling on BP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the industry to \u201cimmediately end the search for new fossil fuels and start a rapid and just transition to become 100% renewable energy companies\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking on one of the world&#8217;s most powerful industries is no small task, but when millions of us come together, to stand for what we believe is possible, it sends a powerful message to decision makers.
