From its snow-capped mountains and ancient forests to its stunning network of fjords, this is a country defined by its natural beauty. This is not only unconscionable in the midst of a climate emergency, but we\u2019re also convinced that it\u2019s a violation of the Norwegian Constitution.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might remember that in 2017 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace Nordic and our co-plaintiffs, <a href=\"https:\/\/nu.no\/english\/\">Nature and Youth<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took the Norwegian government to court. This year, we\u2019re appealing the case. We won\u2019t give up the fight to keep Norwegian oil in the ground. And this is why. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1. In the first round of the lawsuit in 2018, the Court agreed that article 112 confers a right to a healthy environment that the government has a responsibility to uphold and that is enforceable in the courts. Absurdly, though, the Court supported the government\u2019s justifications for drilling for more oil.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, continued oil drilling is in direct contravention of the Paris Climate Accord, of which Norway is a party.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>2. Out of sight, out of mind &#8211; Norwegian oil is burned outside its borders<\/b><\/h4>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government has adopted an out of sight, out of mind philosophy, where they argue that they are not responsible for the emissions from the oil they drill, because the oil is not burned in Norway. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But no matter where oil is burned, it fuels climate change.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the essence of the Norwegian oil problem &#8211;&nbsp; Norway is an oil giant and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/priceofoil.org\/2017\/08\/09\/the-skys-limit-norway-why-norway-should-lead-the-way-in-a-managed-decline-of-oil-and-gas-extraction\/\"><b>7th biggest exporter of climate-wrecking emissions on the planet<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, yet it refuses to take responsibility for its role in the global climate emergency and its commitment to the Paris Agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>3. What we already see unfolding is a climate crisis. But companies like Norwegian Equinor are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exploring for new oil, literally drilling us deeper and deeper into this crisis. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/jan\/07\/much-worlds-fossil-fuel-reserve-must-stay-buried-prevent-climate-change-study-says\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">science says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span>we have already found more oil than we can afford to burn.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>4. In 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2019\/10\/15\/770107636\/after-dorians-wrath-little-miracles-amid-a-painful-recovery?t=1571393489083\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hurricane Dorian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spread death and destruction over the Bahamas, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unprecedented wildfires devastated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-49224776\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large parts of Siberia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/23\/americas\/amazon-wildfires-411\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fire-begets-more-fires-rainforests-slip-into-cycle-of-destruction-11571153534\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, threatening lives and destroying the very forests that help mitigate the worst effects of the climate breakdown.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway, one of the richest countries in the world, can no longer ignore that its role as a major oil and gas producer is contributing to the death and destruction which is hitting vulnerable communities the hardest.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b>5. A win in court would mean that these drilling plans get cancelled, potentially preventing the pollution from millions of barrels of oil, and this could also set a precedent to stop other illegal fossil fuel projects.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This case is part of a wave of people stepping up for the climate, and right now there are more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2018\/06\/18\/492518.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600 active climate lawsuits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; charging governments and corporations &#8211; in 28 countries.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>What would you say to the governments and oil companies<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are justifying their climate-wrecking actions with absurd excuses? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplevsoil.org\/en\/peoplevsoilstatements\">Support the case by adding your name as evidence in court and writing a statement<\/a>. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak your heart.
