The country of fjords and astonishing nature? Isn&#8217;t it pretty!<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Joerg Modrow \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway is a part of Scandinavia, it\u2019s the area\u2019s largest maritime nation, and hosts the Nobel Peace Prize.&nbsp; So you\u2019d think they\u2019d do anything to protect their nature and the future of humanity, right? Well. Nope. NoWay is Norway doing enough. Here are just five of the ways that they&#8217;re failing us.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<h4>Less than 1% of their coastal areas are protected<\/h4>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway promised to protect 10% of its coastal areas (in line with scientific recommendations) by 2020, as a part of the \u201cParis Agreement for Biodiversity\u201d. And, have they fulfilled it? Surprise: they&#8217;ve protected less than 1% of their marine and coastal waters. And since they signed this treaty in 2010 it seems very unlikely that they\u2019ll be able to protect the rest in the next two months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-giphy\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/funny-norway-12dm3fh5ExmLpm\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<h4>They&#8217;re pushing against a Global Ocean Treaty<\/h4>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is extremely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/04\/4475b2c2-updatedgreenpeace_30x30_blueprint_report_web.pdf\">protect the world\u2019s oceans<\/a> with a strong Global Ocean Treaty covering at least 30% of all the world\u2019s oceans with a network of Ocean Sanctuaries. Surely Norway and its nature-loving government will prioritise it, since they know we will never be able to stop climate change if don&#8217;t?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you mean, Norway is one of the governments trying to water down any strong Global Ocean Treaty?! Oh.. so Norway <strong><em>doesn\u2019t<\/em><\/strong> support setting a global target of protecting at least 30% of the oceans or any strict mechanisms for preventing oil drilling, seabed mining and overfishing from destroying parts of the ocean ?<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nope, Norway is just pretending to care!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/10jojWDGZ8yGPK\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<h4>They&#8217;re pushing against all kinds of ocean protection<\/h4>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of supporting a strong Global Ocean Treaty, Norway argues for continuing to manage our oceans in the way they are now &#8211; the way that has pushed them to the brink of collapse. Worse, when there have been possibilities to create protected areas, the Norwegian government has been using their power to block them: in 2016, Norway helped <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/archivo-es.greenpeace.org\/espana\/es\/news\/2016\/Junio\/Norway-Denmark-and-Iceland-prevent-protection-of-unique-Arctic-Area-\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">block the first protected area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from being established in the Central Arctic Ocean. As recently as last year, Norway, together with Russia and China, was responsible for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/19137\/greenpeace-slams-antarctic-ocean-commission-for-failing-its-mandate-to-protect-antarctic-waters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create the world\u2019s largest ocean sanctuary in the Antarctic.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, Norway doesn\u2019t have the best track record when it comes to protecting life in the oceans.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-giphy\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/fallontonight-tonight-show-cardi-b-3o751Yxe9UjX26BZbG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/3o751Yxe9UjX26BZbG\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Tonight Show Yes GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - Find &amp; Share on GIPHY\" width=\"480\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<h4>They spend more on funding the oil industry than they do on protecting the ocean<\/h4>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway&#8217;s oil industry makes it the world&#8217;s 7th largest exporter of carbon emissions. In its latest state budget, Norway plans to spend \u20ac6.9 million next year on oil exploration, which is a small fraction of the total oil spend, but still 10 times more than the government spends on protecting the ocean. Now the Norwegian government wants to allow drilling for oil in the Arctic! We don\u2019t need to tell you all the reasons that is a potential disaster. But there&#8217;s a lot.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yep, that&#8217;s the sound of sea-life dying and the world failing to achieve the Paris Agreement. Thanks for the help, Norway!<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/MLFLzuFc5MInK\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<h4>Their Prime Minister keeps making excuses<\/h4>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway\u2019s Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrk.no\/nordland\/greenpeace-vil-verne-en-tredel-av-havene-1.14503748\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that ocean protection doesn&#8217;t create the jobs we need. As you can tell, Erna Solberg has obviously not listened to all the scientists who agree that life in our oceans will die if large parts of the oceans are not protected from destructive activities. Dead seas are not great producers of jobs either, by the way.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, it seems like the Norwegian government needs to read up on the latest science. Maybe we can remind Erna Solberg that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ocean.si.edu\/ocean-life\/plankton\/every-breath-you-take-thank-ocean\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every second breath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we take comes from the ocean. Even she must agree that being able to breathe is important?<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-giphy\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/you-suck-community-donald-glover-LgJST7I2HlWo0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media0.giphy.com\/media\/LgJST7I2HlWo0\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"You Suck Donald Glover GIF - Find &amp; Share on GIPHY\" width=\"500\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/24540\/heroes-in-action-a-tribute-to-all-climate-strikers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7,5 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have taken it to the streets to demand climate justice and more than 2 million people have demanded a strong Global Ocean Treaty, we would expect a big ocean nation like Norway to lead the way in giving the oceans the real protection they urgently need. Rather than letting oil companies dump their oil rigs at sea.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t know about you, but we think the only thing that should be dumped right now is Norway\u2019s ocean politics.
