Greenpeace Switzerland responded by exposing the lack of progress made by Nestl\u00e9 in the past year and called on the company to be a leader towards building reusable systems that protect both people and the planet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestle.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-04\/speeches-annual-general-meeting-2020-en.pdf\">Nestl\u00e9\u2019s CEO speech,<\/a> Greenpeace USA Global Plastics Project Leader Graham Forbes said:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Despite acknowledging its need to address the plastic pollution crisis, Nestl\u00e9 has done very little to end its dependency on fossil fuel\u2013based plastic packaging, which represents a significant threat to our climate, oceans and health. Since last year\u2019s AGM, Nestl\u00e9 has increasingly invested in the broken recycling system and other false solutions like chemical recycling. The company sells more than a billion products a day and yet less than 1% of its products are delivered in reusable packaging.<strong> <\/strong>Until Nestl\u00e9 fully embraces systems of refill and reuse instead of destructive throwaway plastic, the company will continue to fail its customers, its shareholders and the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt is unacceptable for a company like Nestl\u00e9\u2014which has the resources to be a leader in solving the plastic pollution crisis\u2014to continue to pollute the planet with single-use packaging. The only sustainable way forward is for Nestl\u00e9 to end its reliance on fossil fuel\u2013based plastic packaging, phase out unnecessary single-use plastics and embrace systems of refill and reuse. Unfortunately, to date, the company\u2019s efforts to tackle plastic pollution are little more than veiled attempts to protect its throwaway business model.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Last year, 20 Greenpeace Switzerland activists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/21754\/greenpeace-nestle-annual-general-meeting-end-plastic-pollution\/\">interrupted Nestl\u00e9\u2019s Annual General Meeting (AGM)<\/a> by handing over throwaway plastic waste to Nestl\u00e9 executives in front of their shareholders. The same week, Greenpeace activists and allies from the Break Free From Plastic Movement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/21822\/plastic-monsters-from-around-the-world-return-home-to-nestle\/\">delivered monsters made out of plastic waste to Nestl\u00e9\u2019s offices around the world<\/a> to call out on the corporation\u2019s for polluting and damaging the planet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>ENDS<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>[1] Nestl\u00e9 was one of the top corporate plastic polluters identified in a worldwide cleanup and brand audit effort conducted by the Break Free From Plastic coalition two years in a row.
