The 225 square metre banner reads “BOILING” to indicate a dangerously heating planet. With the support of major celebrities and a global climate movement, the activists have been on the helideck of the Total-operated rig for 30 hours.

Influencers who have shown their support include Jane Fonda, Emma Thompson, Jason Mamoa, Ugandan climate justice activist Vanessa Nakate, climate scientist Ndoni Mcunu, New Zealand school striker Molly Smeele, singer Sofia Jannok from Sapmi and Filipino super typhoon survivor Joanna Sustento.

Speaking from the oil rig, Ida Marie, an activist with Greenpeace Denmark, said:

“I really hope that we will somehow be able to put some pressure on the politicians to make them take the responsibility that they haven’t taken so far to make our society more sustainable and less harmful. There is simply no way Denmark can defend continued exploration of new oil.”

Early yesterday morning, the four activists swam half a kilometre from the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior to reach the oil rig, where they made their way up to the helideck.

Greenpeace Denmark’s climate campaigner Sune Scheller, onboard the Rainbow Warrior added:

“Inequality, pollution and climate break-down are driven by fossil fuel production sites like these. Fires, floods and storms are ringing an alarm bell that must be answered with a global transition towards safe, sustainable, renewable energy for all. We’re privileged to be part of the global movement for climate justice and we hope that governments across the world, including my own in Denmark, will use this moment to build back a better future which leaves dangerous fossil fuels in the ground.”

ENDS

Photos and videos can be downloaded here.

Contacts

Ben Ayliffe, Senior Strategist, Greenpeace International, +447815708683, ben.ayliffe@greenpeace.org

Emma Oehlenschläger, Press Officer, Greenpeace Denmark +45 33376399, emma.oehlenschläger@greenpeace.org

Greenpeace International Press Desk, +31 (0)20 718 2470 (available 24 hours), pressdesk.int@greenpeace.org

Follow @greenpeacepress on Twitter for our latest international press releases

“Inequality, pollution and climate break-down are driven by fossil fuel production sites like these…”

{"_planet4_optimize_post_is_variant":false,"_planet4_optimize_experiment_name":"","_planet4_optimize_variant_name":"
p4_og_title":"","p4_og_description":"","p4_og_image":"","p4_og_image_id":"","p4_seo_canonical_url":"","p4_campaign_name":"not set","p4_local_project":"not set","p4_basket_name":"not set","p4_department":"

69
21,87],"p4-page-type":[98
post-44705","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-energy","tag-rainbow-warrior","tag-oil","p4-page-type-press-release
["GET
