But fire seasons are getting longer and more intense each year. Rising temperatures from our climate crisis dry out forests and other natural areas and make fires more likely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In addition to the dire implications for our planet as a whole, there are more personal impacts. People are losing their lives, their homes, their belongings, their livelihoods. Wildlife is being killed off, and the forests that we all depend on are being wiped out. This year, with the additional risk of COVID-19, people will face even higher health risk, as fires intensify and air pollution increases.<br><\/p>\n\n<p>This year\u2019s fires, similar to years past, come from different causes.<strong> <\/strong>In Brazil, the fires are no accident.<strong> <\/strong>They are being deliberately set by farmers and land grabbers to expand the land used for cattle ranching and industrial agriculture production, and are part of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/insights.trase.earth\/yearbook\/summary\/\" target=\"_blank\">practice<\/a> that is made even worse by Bolsonaro\u2019s anti-environmental agenda. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/30212\/illegal-indigenous-people-threat-self-isolate-covid19\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Peoples are most at risk<\/a>, as their homes, livelihoods and health are threatened by the fires.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" title=\"Fire Moratorium - Deforestation and Fire Monitoring in the Amazon in August, 2020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2020\/08\/3d905ed1-gp0stupvj-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Fire in the Jaci-Paran\u00e1 Extractive Reserve, in Porto Velho, Rond\u00f4nia state.\nOne month after a presidential decree forbidding fires in the Amazon and Pantanal, Greenpeace flew over Amazonas and Rond\u00f4nia states to verify how efficient the measure was. Like Brazil, these fires are mainly caused by farmers clearing the land for agriculture. However, the fires have been made worse by the strongest drought in 70 years <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/08\/fires-in-argentinas-parana-delta-are-burning-out-of-control\/\" target=\"_blank\">and lack of rainfall<\/a>. Fires are also now raging in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-argentina-environment-fires\/raging-fires-in-argentinas-cordoba-province-prompt-evacuations-threaten-homes-idUSKBN25K23H\">Argentina\u2019s Cordoba province<\/a>, threatening homes and forcing evacuations. These are also intentional fires, based on the economic interests of the agricultural and real estate sectors. Smoke from the fires is<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/147151\/wildfire-smoke-shrouds-the-us-west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> spreading across the western US and the Pacific Ocean<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2020, the California fires are worsened by one crisis facing the region and worsening another:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/09\/climate\/why-california-fires.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\">Climate change is exacerbating the conditions that make fires more catastrophic<\/a>. Hotter and drier circumstances are extending the wildfire season and fueling fires.<\/li><li>As COVID-19 cases continue to surge in California, the fires are worsening air quality and further endangering those Black, Brown, and Indigenous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-04-08\/air-pollution-linked-to-higher-coronavirus-death-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">communities already at greatest risk from the pandemic<\/a>. According to satellite monitoring data, the total area burnt by fires in Russia since the beginning of 2020 has overcome<strong> <\/strong>22 million hectares. More than 14 million hectares of these territories suffered forest fires. Most of these fires are not being fought.
