Workers and their unions have played a critical part in shaping the world we know today. Often demonstrating incredible perseverance, resilience and stubborn optimism. If you enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/weekend-lesson-four-day-working-week-a9274096.html\">weekends off<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcs.org.uk\/what-have-the-unions-ever-done-for-us\">sick pay <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/about-the-ilo\/newsroom\/news\/WCMS_008009\/lang--en\/index.htm\">parental leave<\/a> &#8211; then you have benefited too!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>People-power is at the heart of Greenpeace, and the workers movement has much to teach us. The power of collective bargaining and the courage of strike action are proof that people can work together to change the world for the better. Think oil and gas workers, aviation engineers, factory workers making petrol and diesel vehicles. The decline of these industries is inevitable as we cut greenhouse gas emissions, and this will impact working people and their families. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/sep\/29\/fossil-fuel-workers-transition-renewables-covid\">Many are looking for a way out or to re-skill<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>On the other hand, there is a huge amount of work to be done in creating cleaner transport, building renewable energy infrastructure, insulating homes and restoring nature. These are all industries that will continue to grow. Done badly, it could worsen them. Everyone should be able to support their loved ones and enjoy a decent quality of life. We must work together to make sure that the investment and support is in place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Many unions and rank-and-file workers around the world have been making this point for years. The term j<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ituc-csi.org\/just-transition-centre#:~:text=A%20Just%20Transition%20secures%20the,%2C%20employers%2C%20government%20and%20communities.\">ust transition was born of the labour movement<\/a> and impacted communities. Its demands include things like; funding for re-training, employment guarantees when dirty industries wind down, good labour standards and pay in the greener growth industries, access to join a union, and provisions for relocation when appropriate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Plus a strong social safety net extended to whole communities and development plans for regions impacted. We say polluters should pay up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>When fossil fuel companies seed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/stories-53640382\">doubt about the science<\/a>, or use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.uk\/news\/oil-industry-giants-like-bp-will-push-climate-past-1-5oc-global-heating\/\">carbon accounting tricks <\/a>to&nbsp; deny the scale of the change ahead, or promise jobs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caneurope.org\/content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Fossil-gas-should-not-receive-public-funds.pdf#:~:text=Fossil%20gas%20demand%20is%20decreasing,not%20needed%20to%20expand%20it.&amp;text=For%20the%20years%202015%20to,compared%20to%20actual%20gas%20demand2\">they can\u2019t deliver<\/a>, or use climate change as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.fr\/casse-sociale-et-greenwashing-a-grandpuits-total-fait-du-sale\/\">excuse for job cuts made for other reasons<\/a>, they aren&#8217;t doing their employees any favours. Instead, they are dragging them further down into the hole they are digging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>So today, on International Workers Day, let&#8217;s all of us who care about a green and peaceful future think about what we can do to push for a just transition. Not just in words but in actions and policy demands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>And let&#8217;s reaffirm our conviction in the power of people to work together to change the world for the better. Construction workers would down tools and forced developers to change plans.
