{"id":48654,"date":"2022-09-20T20:19:12","date_gmt":"2022-09-20T18:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=48654"},"modified":"2023-07-21T11:03:16","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T09:03:16","slug":"heatwaves-climate-change-fossil-fuels-must-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/48654\/heatwaves-climate-change-fossil-fuels-must-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Global heat waves are fossil fuel-driven climate chaos"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Unprecedented danger caused by heat waves and extreme weather will continue to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/news\/%E2%80%9C-heatwave-new-normal%E2%80%9D-says-wmo-secretary-general\">new normal<\/a> if we don\u2019t take urgent action to stop fossil fuel-driven climate change.<\/p>\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/19\/1112318803\/uk-100-degree-heat-dangerous\">England<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/08\/22\/china-heat-wave-drought-unprecedented\">China<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/india\/en\/publication\/13612\/summers-like-none-other-heatwave-trends-in-10-capital-indian-cities\/\">India<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/150083\/heatwaves-and-fires-scorch-europe-africa-and-asia\">North Africa<\/a>, the<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/150318\/a-long-lasting-western-heatwave\"> United States<\/a> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/arctic-and-antarctica-simultaneous-heatwaves\">the Arctic<\/a>, record-breaking heat waves are annually putting lives, livelihoods, and communities at risk. The soaring temperatures not only pose individual health dangers, but they also put entire ecosystems and communities at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/western-north-american-extreme-heat-virtually-impossible-without-human-caused-climate-change\/\">increased risk<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/09\/06\/us\/weather-forecast-news-summer\">wildfires<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/19\/1112316161\/the-european-heatwave-is-spreading-northward-fueling-wildfire-and-drought-danger\">droughts<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/a-climate-fueled-heat-wave-tests-california-rsquo-s-power-grid\/\">failures of power grids<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>In response to the widespread surge of deadly heat waves around the world, the <a href=\"https:\/\/prometeosevilla.com\/en\/prometeo-seville-project\/the-project\/\">proMETEO Seville Project<\/a> took an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/worlds-first-spains-seville-name-classify-heatwaves-2022-06-22\/\">unprecedented step<\/a> after a record-breaking high temperatures in Spain in July 2022: They began naming heat waves \u2014 in the same manner as storms such as hurricanes \u2014 to raise public awareness about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/hazstat\/\">grave dangers<\/a> posed by extreme heat. There were more than 1,000 deaths in Spain attributable to high temperatures from July 10 to July 19, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/momo.isciii.es\/panel_momo\/\">Carlos III Institute.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Amid a global climate crisis catalyzed by fossil fuels, such tragic loss of life related to heat waves is becoming alarmingly common. In July 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-heat-dome-sudden-deaths-revised-2021-1.6232758\">nearly 600 people died<\/a>\u00a0 in British Columbia in Canada with hundreds more perishing in\u00a0 the Pacific Northwest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2021\/07\/01\/heat-wave-deaths-pacific-northwest\/\">the United States<\/a> due to the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.abm6860\">historically extreme heat wave<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>As is so often the case, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/climate-justice\/\">most intense impacts of the climate crisis are often experienced by those least responsible<\/a> for the carbon emissions exacerbating extreme weather events. These communities urgently need empathy, aid, and climate action. The entire global community needs to demand that fossil fuel companies and corporate polluters stop accelerating climate change with reckless, profit-hungry drilling and burning of coal, oil, and gas.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is happening?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/science\/we-are-at-a-crossroads-new-ipcc-report-says-its-fossil-fuels-or-our-future\/\">fossil-fueled climate crisis<\/a> means temperatures are soaring around the world, setting unwanted records year after year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2022, the United Kingdom had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-62758367\">its joint hottest June through August on record<\/a>, which included the first-ever \u201cred warning\u201d for extreme heat issued by the Met Office.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CevD3vnLybr\/?hl=en\">India experienced its hottest weather in 122 years<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In just two years, we saw significant increases in temperatures and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/heatwave?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#heatwave<\/a> days across the cities. One of those record-breaking temperatures occurred in Lytton in the province of British Columbia. The village <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/29\/americas\/canada-heat-wave-deaths\/index.html\">experienced a historic temperature<\/a> of 49.5\u00b0C \/ 121\u00b0F on June 29, 2021. A day later, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/01\/americas\/canada-town-evacuation-extreme-heat\/index.html\">evacuated due to a wildfire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Decades of empty promises &amp; inaction from politicians like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinTrudeau?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JustinTrudeau<\/a> laid the foundation for the destruction of Lytton, BC.<br><br>So we travelled there this week to ask Lytton fire survivors: what would you say to world leaders at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COP26?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COP26<\/a>?<br><br>Powerful words from Patrick Mitchell\ud83d\udc47 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/z0siiUQ9hC\">pic.twitter.com\/z0siiUQ9hC<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Greenpeace Canada (@GreenpeaceCA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenpeaceCA\/status\/1456332952334442498?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>In California, Death Valley reached a temperature of 53\u00b0C \/ 127\u00b0F, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/death-valley-127-degrees-record-hottest-september-day-on-the-planet\/\">the hottest temperature ever recorded on the planet September 2022<\/a>. Like so many places experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-017-15896-3\">concurrent climate impacts<\/a>, California is again beset by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/12\/us\/western-wildfires-air-quality-monday\/index.html\">wildfires<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-09-13\/californias-drought-touches-everyone-but-water-restrictions-play-out-unevenly-across-communities\">drought<\/a> in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/08\/us\/western-us-heat-wave-thursday\/index.html\">extreme heat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In North Africa, Tunisia a July 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/heat-wave-fires-damaging-tunisias-grain-harvest-2022-06-27\/\">heat wave and fires damaged the country&#8217;s grain crop<\/a>. On 13 July 13, in the capital city of Tunis, the temperature reached 48\u00b0C \/118 \u00b0F, breaking a 40-year record.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>This is a climate emergency!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is this happening?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>It\u2019s clear that fossil-fuel driven climate change is contributing to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22538401\/heat-wave-record-temperature-extreme-climate-change-drought\">increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwaves<\/a> as well as driving<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/climate-change-increases-risk-fires-western-us\"> the conditions<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/prevent-uncontrollable-global-fires\/\">bigger and faster growing wildfires<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Fossil fuel companies have put profits over people and the planet and will continue to do so while masquerading as friends of the environment \u2014 unless we stop them. Meanwhile, those least responsible for the climate crisis \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/46927\/why-climate-justice-is-impossible-without-racial-justice\/\">especially communities of color and Indigenous Peoples around the world<\/a> \u2014 have disproportionately experienced the most severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/46010\/when-climate-emergencies-become-our-climate-realities\/\">climate impacts<\/a> and health harms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>If governments don\u2019t take urgent action for a just transition to renewable energy then the climate emergency is only going to get worse, with parts of the world becoming uninhabitable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>We need to treat this as the emergency that it is and push for urgent action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>We can take lessons from the global action and local empathy in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We need empathy for communities in danger paired with pressure around the world on governments to leave fossil fuels to build back green.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>There is still time to limit the disruption and stay on course to meet the 1.5\u00b0C goal outlined in the Paris Agreement to avoid the worst-case climate scenarios. Wherever you are in the world, there are ways to get involved:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>The #FossilFreeRevolution is growing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\">Greenpeace EU<\/a> is calling on the European Commission to <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/85501\/petition\/1\">propose an EU legislative act that bans fossil fuel advertising and sponsorships<\/a>. Meanwhile, they are also calling on European finance institutions to <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/103121\/action\/1\">stop financing oil companies that are fueling the climate crisis and war<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\">Greenpeace East Asia<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/drive-change\/%5C\">demanding global automakers to end fossil fuel cars<\/a>.
