Flash floods? Tornado warnings?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Nope. Nope. Nope.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Not in New York City. Right? At least, there didn\u2019t use to be? Definitely, not often.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>But, also, actually, yes,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/02\/1021185475\/climate-change-means-more-subway-flooding-worldwide-like-new-york-just-experienc\"> in New York City now<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>And, almost certainly, again some other day sooner than we\u2019re prepared for thanks to the fossil fuel-driven climate crisis that is bringing extreme weather events to \u2014 and through \u2014 our front doors, wherever in the world they may be.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Just days after Hurricane Ida \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/29\/climate\/hurricane-ida-category.html\">a storm that strengthened quickly thanks in part to climate change<\/a> \u2014 made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/29\/us\/hurricane-ida-a-powerful-category-4-storm-batters-louisiana.html\">landfall in Louisiana with Category 4 winds<\/a> gusting up to 150 miles per hour, the <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/news\/news\/2021-09-02-at-least-14-killed-in-new-york-and-new-jersey-3-in-pennsylvania-as-historic\">remnants of the storm besieged the Northeast<\/a> of the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The images from New York City revealed both the severity of the storm but also the ways in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/02\/new-york-floods-show-infrastructure-is-not-ready-for-climate-change.html\">infrastructure in communities around the world is ill-prepared<\/a> for the increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events caused by fossil fuel-driven climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Watch: The New York area was under a state of emergency on Thursday after the remnants of Hurricane Ida led to at least 14 deaths and disrupted subway service. Across the city, New Yorkers documented the scene as flood waters overwhelmed buses and subways. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/spVsdgF0XX\">https:\/\/t.co\/spVsdgF0XX<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/r2vg2aDRVg\">pic.twitter.com\/r2vg2aDRVg<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The New York Times (@nytimes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes\/status\/1433452189284978696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSNewYorkNY\/status\/1433241055302803458\">the first time in its history<\/a>, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for New York City for what it considered \u201ca life-threatening situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is at Erasmus Hall High School, right in the heart of Flatbush and District 40. The 3.15 inches of rain measured during a single hour in Central Park on 1 Sept. shattered the record set on 21 August during Tropical Storm Henri. The <a href=\"https:\/\/nbc-2.com\/news\/2021\/08\/23\/henri-breaks-133-year-old-weather-record-in-new-york-city\/\">previous record had stood for 133 years<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/TomNamako\/status\/1433247689945321476\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>The inundation of water was not the only danger facing the region as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/national-international\/catastrophic-tornado-rips-apart-homes-in-mullica-hill-nj\/3252635\/\">tornado ripped apart homes to the south in New Jersey<\/a>. The impacts of the storm were also experienced in nearby states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/ida-aftermath-09-02-21\/index.html?tab=CT\">Connecticut<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/ida-aftermath-09-02-21\/index.html?tab=PA\">Pennsylvania<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/ida-aftermath-09-02-21\/index.html?tab=MD\">Maryland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">More of the damage in Mullica Hill on Marvin Lane. \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCPhiladelphia?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NBCPhiladelphia<\/a>\u2069 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xPV038CNnp\">pic.twitter.com\/xPV038CNnp<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Matt DeLucia (@MattDeLucia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattDeLucia\/status\/1433210746633170945?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 1, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the aftermath of this latest storm, the damage assessment and the mourning begin anew.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>After a sleepless night watching the street for signs of flooding and reading neighbors\u2019 accounts on social networks of clearing storm drains themselves to keep the local water levels from rising, I checked in on my parents in New Jersey, then my brother in Harlem, and various friends around the region. I offered assistance to those with flooded homes and gawked at the viral videos of submerged thoroughfares trending on social media. Such rituals are becoming all too common.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>I was lucky this time, lucky for now, only needing to clean small amounts of rainwater that leaked into my apartment in Red Hook, a Brooklyn neighborhood still feeling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/top-stories\/2020\/07\/10\/for-red-hook-residents--the-aftermath-of-hurricane-sandy-is-still-a-crisis\">effects of Superstorm Sandy<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n\n<p>But not everyone was so fortunate, and, as is so often the case with climate impacts, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/reports\/fossil-fuel-racism\/\">heaviest burdens are too often placed on those already marginalized<\/a>. Within 24 hours, the death toll had surpassed 40, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/02\/nyregion\/ida-flooding-nyc.html\">according to <em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">How the climate crisis is an inequality crisis:<br><br>Many of these deaths occurred in basement dwellings, many of which are illegal and growing in # due to the unaffordable housing crisis, but do not meet safety standards required to keep people safe in incidents like flash floods. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6ImAWXEvEj\">https:\/\/t.co\/6ImAWXEvEj<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1433466374039478278?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the light of the following day, the connection between the extreme weather of the previous night and our global climate crisis was also being clearly stated by New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/therecount\/status\/1433442464426303491\">New York State Governor Kathy Hochul<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last night\u2019s storm was horrifying and unlike anything our city has ever faced. We lost nine people to this storm. The sudden brutality of these storms is not a coincidence. Climate change is REAL and we have to act NOW before more lives are lost.<\/p>&mdash; Mayor Eric Adams (@NYCMayor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYCMayor\/status\/1433465244454641664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>This is no isolated storm, but another climate impact among many around the world in recent weeks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/49043\/climate-crisis-fires-burning-amazon-turkey-california\/\">Fires have ravaged California, the Amazon<\/a>, Turkey, Greece, Russia, and other places. Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/48654\/heatwaves-climate-change-fossil-fuels-must-go\/\">heat waves have raised temperatures<\/a> from Canada to <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2021-07-morocco-swelters-heatwave.html\">Morocco<\/a>. Japan, Bangladesh, Cuba, and Belgium are among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/48852\/an-uncomfortable-new-normal\/\">countries also rocked by floods<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Such widespread danger is why U.N. Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres described the report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/a> issued in August as a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/un-sounds-clarion-call-over-irreversible-climate-impacts-by-humans-2021-08-09\/\">code red for humanity<\/a>&#8220;. The IPCC report further strengthened the connection between carbon emissions and worsening climate extremes and made clear the need for urgent climate action.<\/p>\n\n<p>Just a few miles from my apartment in waterlogged New York City, Greenpeace USA has made clear one necessary piece of action that must be talent to avoid the worst climate scenarios: Government subsidies for fossil fuel companies must go!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSchumer?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@senschumer<\/a> can make history this fall. So we erected a billboard in his neighborhood to confront him with a simple truth: Fossil fuel subsidies have got to go.
