Or \u201cbeing a good mother\u201d with cooking meat for dinner?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Nothing!<\/p>\n\n<p>But the meat industry wants us to believe otherwise, or at least it seems that way if we take a look at their advertising campaigns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 7 myths of Big Meat\u2019s marketing<\/h2>\n\n<p>According to a Greenpeace Denmark study released today, <a href=\"http:\/\/greenpeace.dk\/dissected\"><em>Dissected, the 7 myths of Big Meat\u2019s marketing<\/em><\/a> while the number of vegetarians, vegan and flexitarians is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainalytics.com\/esg-research\/resource\/investors-esg-blog\/2020-the-year-of-the-flexitarian\">rising<\/a> in Europe, the meat industry is going against the tide by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/47164\/killer-offer-on-meat-europe-advertising\/\">investing millions of Euros in meat marketing<\/a> in the attempt to slow the change in society.<\/p>\n\n<p>The semioticians that worked on the research, who are experts in decoding hidden meanings behind advertising, found <strong>7 myths<\/strong> often adopted by big meat brands and organisations in Europe, that play to known consumer needs to feel accepted, successful, loved, respected and ultimately, to feel \u2018good\u2019, and as a result fuel meat consumption: <\/p>\n\n<p>\u2022 Myth 1: \u2018Meat is part of the climate solution, not the problem\u2019<br>\u2022 Myth 2: \u2018Meat is good for you\u2019<br>\u2022 Myth 3: \u2018Eating (red) meat makes you more of a man\u2019<br>\u2022 Myth 4: \u2018Good women prepare and serve meat to their family\u2019<br>\u2022 Myth 5: \u2018Eating meat is a patriotic act\u2019<br>\u2022 Myth 6: \u2018Eating meat brings people together\u2019<br>\u2022 Myth 7: \u2018Eating meat is about freedom and choice\u2019<\/p>\n<div data-render=\"planet4-blocks\/gallery\" make things worse: these myths are targeted to some of the most vulnerable groups in society. Young children, for example, who are not fully capable of processing the information in front of them. Or young adults who might be wrestling with their sexual identity. And of course parents, trying to do the right thing for the future of their children in the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/50848\/eu-complicity-global-deforestation-forests-law\/\">the deepening climate and biodiversity crises<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>While as citizens we can play our part by reducing our intake of animal products for our health and the wellbeing of the planet, it is actually the public authorities\u2019 responsibility to make sure that our efforts are not derailed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/45548\/report-eu-spent-e252-million-advertising-meat-and-dairy\/\">misleading bombardment of meat advertising<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The marketing playbook used by the meat industry is no different from the one deployed by the tobacco or alcohol industries in the last decades. Advertising of tobacco and alcohol has been highly regulated for the well-being of society.
