Already <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FilippoGrandi\/status\/1502209903062142979\">up to 2.5 million Ukranians<\/a> have fled the country in what\u2019s been reported as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/06\/ukraine-fastest-growing-refugee-crisis-since-second-world-war\">the fastest-growing refugee crisis<\/a> since World War II.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Here are just some of the ways Greenpeace organisations have joined the humanitarian efforts supporting Ukraine:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Slovakia<strong> <\/strong>is partnering with a humanitarian organization called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleinneed.net\/what-we-do\/humanitarian-aid-and-development\/ukraine\">People In Need<\/a>, and has already delivered more than 5 tons of supplies to the Ukrainian side of the border.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Romania brought tents to two international bus stations where refugees are coming from Moldova, with volunteers greeting them with hot tea, snacks, power, water, first aid, translation support and information.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peace Not Oil<\/h2>\n\n<p>While watching in horror at the violent tragedy unfolding, the world is becoming increasingly aware of the reality recently articulated by Ukraine\u2019s representative on the UN\u2019s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20220227-russian-official-apologises-for-war-in-ukraine-at-un-climate-meet\">&#8220;Human-induced climate change and the war on Ukraine have the same roots : fossil fuels and our dependence on them.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Whether it has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/mar\/04\/dockers-on-merseyside-refuse-to-unload-russian-oil-stanlow-kent-netherlands-ukraine\">dockworkers across Europe refusing to unload Russian oil<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/news\/uefa-ends-partnership-with-russian-energy-company-gazprom\/0KZpGVsmrzP9\/\">sporting organizations cutting ties with Gazprom<\/a>, it is undeniable that more and more people are aware that we need to break ties to fossil fuels in order to build a safe and secure future for people and the planet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In solidarity with those under threat from fossil-fueled climate chaos and militarism, Greenpeace activists have continued non-violent direct actions to call for a just transition to renewable energy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace<strong> <\/strong>activists in Germany demonstrated on 7 March in the port of Bremen against oil imports from Russia, which help finance the Russian government\u2019s war in Ukraine. Until we can leave climate-wrecking fossil fuels behind us, world leaders like Putin who value power over people and the greedy fossil fuel oligarchs who benefit from the status quo will be emboldened to initiate conflicts with tragic consequences. It is Putin and these oligarchs, and not the Russian people, who are behind the violence unfolding now.<\/p>\n\n<p>As part of a stand against Putin\u2019s monied support system,<strong> <\/strong>Greenpeace Aotearoa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/ukraine-peace-flotilla-on-its-way-with-call-to-freeze-oligarch-assets\/\">joined a peace flotilla<\/a> on 10 March that converged on the luxury coastal retreat of a Russian oligarch. It is just another of the creative acts of peaceful resistance that will continue to take place until the world gets what is demanding: Peace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" title=\"Peace Sign in Heroes\u2019 Square, Budapest to Protest Against The War\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2022\/03\/40834146-gp1sx0ta-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"Thousands of people form a huge peace sign to protest against the invasion of Ukraine and to express their compassion for the innocent victims of the war in Budapest\u2019s Heroes\u2019 Square. The demonstration has been organised by Greenpeace Hungary.\nDuring the event, 12-year-old Patrizia, a Ukrainian living in Hungary, and Natasa, a filmmaker of Russian origin spoke to the crowd. Actress Dorottya Udvaros and J\u00e1nos B\u00e1lint Mez\u0151, director of Greenpeace Hungary also stepped on stage to speak about Greenpeace\u2019s demand for peace. This message was poignantly displayed in Budapest\u2019s Heroes\u2019 Square on 9 March in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/52635\/greenpeace-hungary-creates-huge-peace-sign-in-budapest-to-protest-against-the-war\/\">demonstration organized by Greenpeace Hungary<\/a> where thousands of people formed a huge peace sign to protest against the invasion of Ukraine and to express their compassion for the innocent victims of the war. <\/p>\n\n<p>As is so often the case in times of conflict, it is the peaceful acts of solidarity and resistance of everyday people around the world that will light the way toward a just and sustainable future for all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"EmptyMessage\">Block content is empty.
