Millions of people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/52558\/how-to-help-people-affected-by-the-ukraine-war\/\">actively standing in solidarity with the victims of the war<\/a>, supporting Ukrainian refugees and expressing opposition to the war (whether by donating, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/52662\/ukraine-peace-activists-solidarity-protests-oil\/\">protesting<\/a>, offering housing, etc.). The connection is clear: fossil fuels (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/46145\/russian-coal-embargo-exposes-eu-reluctance-to-phase-out-oil-gas-nuclear\/\">and uranium<\/a>) Europe buys from Russian companies. Those same companies not only fuel but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.source-material.org\/blog\/bp-under-pressure-over-fuel-for-russian-military\">fund the Russian army<\/a>, and thanks to some of the largest banks and investors in Europe, your money could be funding it.<\/p>\n\n<p>We need to expose and confront the European financial institutions still funding Russian fossil fuels and the war. They also know that money flows can and should be redirected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/45302\/what-does-safety-mean-to-you\/\">towards peace and safety<\/a>, prioritising the needs of people and creating just economic and social systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Ukranians living in Vienna <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-society\/3445178-at-vienna-rally-activists-call-on-raiffeisen-shareholders-urged-to-pull-out-of-russia.html\">protested in front of the Raiffeisen Bank <\/a>during the bank\u2019s annual general meeting at the end of March and demanded that it quits its ties with the Russian market and stop sponsoring the war in Ukraine. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpinavePrachy\/status\/1510955163875426304\">Czech activists protested at Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, Raiffeisen Bank and UniCredit\u2019s Czech subsidiaries<\/a> in April and demanded they stop financing Russian fossil fuels and the war. All over the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/52988\/fossil-fuels-are-fuelling-war\/\">fossil fuels have driven conflicts and political instability<\/a>, and they will continue to do so as long as we consume and fund them.<\/p>\n\n<p>A secure and safe energy system will be a huge part of creating lasting peace. Turning to renewables and energy efficiency redirects money from conflict to securing peace.
