Most of the soy this ship is carrying will be used as animal feed (to produce meat, dairy, eggs, farmed fish), as it\u2019s the case for almost all the soy imported to the EU (at least 85%).<\/p>\n\n<p>Global soy production has<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.greenpeace.fr\/site\/uploads\/2019\/06\/hooked_on_meat_EN_web.pdf\"> more than doubled since 1997<\/a>, driven by growing demand for animal feed, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/comtrade.un.org\/\">European Union is now the world\u2019s second largest soy importer<\/a>, with around 33 million tonnes of soy products sourced from abroad every year. More than half of the natural vegetation of the Brazilian Cerrado, home to both Indigenous communities and unique species like the jaguar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/27456\/report-under-fire\/\">has already been cleared for soy plantations and pasture lands.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A strong EU law to protect forests, people and nature is direly needed<\/h3>\n\n<p>Political leaders must pass, monitor and enforce laws to protect the world\u2019s forests and ecosystems to guarantee Indigenous and community land rights, all of which are vital to save the Amazon rainforest and the world\u2019s climate.<\/p>\n\n<p>Right now, the French presidency of the European Council is leading negotiations with other European ministers on a new EU law that could protect precious ecosystems around the world. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/45908\/briefing-eu-anti-deforestation-law-could-have-serious-holes\/\">the planned law is still full of crucial holes<\/a>. For example, the bill only protects forests, and not other critically important natural areas such as the Brazilian Cerrado, while almost half of all Brazilian soy imports come from this nature reserve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>International human rights are also insufficiently enshrined, which means that Indigenous and local communities, who suffer from soy cultivation the most, often do not have their rights properly protected.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2022\/05\/8fda5b3c-gp1sxg09-1024x683.jpg\" title=\"Indigenous leaders Waduwabati Suy\u00e1 and Alberto Fran\u00e7a Dias (Alberto Terena) from Brazil are joining the activity. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/mar\/04\/agribusiness-giants-tried-to-thwart-eu-deforestation-plan-after-cop26-pledge\">seem to be particularly reluctant <\/a>to adopt transparency rules that would require companies to know where the crops for their products have been grown or their cows grazed.<\/p>\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/nature-food\/46045\/analysis-eu-commissions-proposed-anti-deforestation-law\/\">solid, watertight \u2018anti-deforestation\u2019 law<\/a> for the EU would be an important part of the solution.
