This is hurting the most vulnerable populations all around the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/53163\/russia-invasion-of-ukraine-supercharging-food-insecurity-middle-east-north-africa\/\">Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine is supercharging food insecurity in the Middle East and North Africa.<\/a> New research by ActionAid in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/actionaid.org\/news\/2022\/new-research-local-food-and-fuel-prices-more-triple-some-worlds-most-risk-communities\">local prices have more than tripled in some of the most at risk communities<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>This reality baffles most of us who know full well that the global agricultural output has increased significantly with the prospect of feeding the world, yet the number of people that are going hungry or lack adequate supply of nutritious food is increasing. So where is the problem and how can we fix it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>C<\/strong><strong>orporate greed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Our current food system which is primarily controlled by a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/research\/behind-brands\"> few big companies<\/a> and their subsidiaries is utterly broken and needs to be fixed. These companies, proclaiming themselves as the angels of food security, have sown the seeds of hunger, disease, climate change, destruction of biodiversity and suffering of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. This includes pastures and arable land used for feed production. Once a forest is destroyed, it creates a massive imbalance in the ecosystem, leading to the loss and destruction of plants, insects (which are key to food production) and also impacting the patterns of evaporation and rainfall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>On top of this, armed conflicts and wars &#8211; fertile ground for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lighthousereports.nl\/investigation\/the-hunger-profiteers\/\">corporate profiteering<\/a> &#8211; cause a huge loss to biodiversity through oil spills, landmines and the destruction of forests and untouched natural reserves.<br><br>But all we hear from these companies are big lies &#8211; that they are the real safeguards of food security. The opposite is true: <a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/economy\/speculation-is-contributing-to-global-food-insecurity-significantly\">the way Industrial Agriculture and commodity trading companies operate leads to market speculation<\/a>, false narratives on demand and supply that ultimately help them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2022\/apr\/17\/soaring-food-prices-push-more-cargill-family-members-on-to-world-richest-500-list\">make more profits<\/a>. It is estimated that as many as 30% of globally produced calories go straight to waste.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Mitja  Kobal \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>What we need is a robust policy framework to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/43662\/food-sovereignty-now-and-beyond-covid-19\/\">ensure food is produced to feed people, not to feed industry-farmed animals or to fuel cars<\/a>. We need an end to the industrial food system, putting power back into the hands of national governments and their people to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/50065\/better-food-systems-championing-heirloom-rice\/\">localise food production and consumption<\/a>. This can be achieved by giving financial support and incentives to small and medium-scale farmers and their marketing collectives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In his latest message, the UNSG Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said \u2018Let\u2019s be clear; there is no effective solution to the food crisis, without reintegrating Ukraine\u2019s food production\u2019. To an extent, this may be true but it\u2019s just a miniscule part of the solution. What the world needs is to swiftly move away from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www-cdn.oxfam.org\/s3fs-public\/file_attachments\/rr-cereal-secrets-grain-traders-agriculture-30082012-en_4.pdf\">corporate hold<\/a> of the food system and linking it to the financial markets. The UN has to stand tall, address the systemic issue around the broken food system and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/45719\/the-un-in-bed-with-corporate-multinationals-that-put-profits-over-people\/\">not get played<\/a> by corporate interests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Governments and international financial institutions need to regulate the commodities futures market and speculative trading, to end artificial gaps between supply and demand. It lies squarely in the hands of national and regional governments individually and through international cooperation. We cannot accept them telling us lies and false stories about how they are feeding the world.
