We were on the ground to ensure world leaders deliver this <a href=\"https:\/\/greenpeace.org\/PlasticsTreaty\">once-in-a-generation opportunity to limit plastic production and use<\/a> for our human rights, our biodiversity, and our climate. Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/the-myth-of-single-use-plastic-and-recycling\/\">impacts growing more severe every day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A treaty to end the age of plastic \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AJOpinion?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AJOpinion<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marian16rox?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@marian16rox<\/a> \u2935\ufe0f<br><br>\ud83d\udd17: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vF1BvgcGJU\">https:\/\/t.co\/vF1BvgcGJU<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7zrJ5MvgkG\">pic.twitter.com\/7zrJ5MvgkG<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Al Jazeera English (@AJEnglish) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AJEnglish\/status\/1596900405488758784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>The mandate to start the Global Plastics Treaty was issued earlier this year at the resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, and since then it\u2019s been \u201cgo time\u201d. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), said the agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/speech\/leap-forward-environmental-action\">is the most important international multilateral environmental deal since the Paris climate accord<\/a>. But, the kind of plastics treaty our world needs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/exclusive-us-seeks-allies-split-emerges-over-global-plastics-pollution-treaty-2022-09-27\/\">can\u2019t mirror the Paris climate accord<\/a> \u2014 we need universal, binding rules for all countries who chose to ratify the treaty, instead of voluntary national commitments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>For INC-1, we attended the in-person delegation in Uruguay as part of a powerful, devoted, and passionate coalition making an unrelenting push for a strong and ambitious global plastics treaty.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened at INC-1?<\/h2>\n\n<p>As expected, the first meeting was highly procedural. It&#8217;s the first of five INCs to negotiate the Global Plastics Treaty with INC-2 likely being in Paris, France in May 2023. INC-2 will resume conversations that were not concluded during this meeting and be the start of more substantive treaty discussions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/57223\/global-plastics-treaty-negotiations-governments-drag-feet\/\">we did not see the kind of progress we\u2019d like<\/a>, important conversations and interventions were made at INC-1. For example, entire regions voiced urgency and ambition in the global plastics treaty negotiations. Coalitions have been built to provide expert perspectives to negotiators and demand a just transition for workers. Many countries \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/business\/nestl%C3%A9-shamed-as-third-largest-plastic-polluter\/48058444\">even Break Free from Plastic brand audit\u2019s top plastic polluters Nestle and Unilever<\/a> \u2014 are now talking about a full lifecycle approach addressing plastic from when it was produced until its disposal. Importantly, several country delegations cited human rights as one of the objectives of the plastics pollution treaty.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Not-so-good interventions were also made. Some governments slowed down the process through lengthy discussions of moot procedures and processes. In a huge conflict of interest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2022\/11\/27\/a-treaty-to-end-the-age-of-plastic\">the private sector continues to have far too much influence over these negotiations<\/a>, including the polluters responsible for the global plastic pollution crisis.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83c\udd95<br><br>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PlasticsTreaty?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PlasticsTreaty<\/a> negotiations demonstrated that the majority of countries are ready to take urgent action to confront the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PlasticsCrisis?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PlasticsCrisis<\/a>. Just as we were there to advocate for a strong treaty with clear global control measures, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/49484\/report-major-brands-fossil-fuels-plastic-kitchen\/\">petrochemical industry and major fossil fuel companies were out in force<\/a> to undermine the ambitious treaty that people and the planet desperately need.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>As of now, plastics producers are given the same consideration as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/52154\/africa-waste-colonialism-plastic-treaty\/\">communities suffering from their products<\/a> and scientists are sounding the alarm. Plastics treaty negotiations can not be co-opted by welcoming oil and plastics industry lobbyists to dominate the discussion and weaken ambition. How do we end the age of plastic?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n<p>We need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/briefing-towards-an-impactful-global-plastics-treaty\/\">solution<\/a> that matches the scale of the problem. That means a global treaty that includes the entire life cycle of plastic, from extraction to disposal. We need a strong global plastics treaty that dramatically cuts plastic production by establishing global legally-binding control measures and eliminating false solutions, like chemical recycling and incineration, which allow <a href=\"https:\/\/brandaudit.breakfreefromplastic.org\/brand-audit-2022\/\">the top plastic polluters like Coca-Cola<\/a> and big oil and petrochemical companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/12\/13\/industry-chemical-recycling-plastics-00073650\">Exxon<\/a> to continue flooding the world with even more plastic.
