To avoid even more catastrophic extreme weather events and health hazards from coal, oil and gas projects, we must push back against polluting industries. Every new fossil fuel project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/pathway-to-critical-and-formidable-goal-of-net-zero-emissions-by-2050-is-narrow-but-brings-huge-benefits\">makes<\/a> our planet less and less habitable.<\/p>\n\n<p>Not only are women on the front lines of climate change, but also leading the global environmental movement: Some of the most celebrated include <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drvandanashiva\">Vandana Shiva<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/vanessanakate1\/?hl=en\">Vanessa Nakate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/disharavii\">Disha Ravi<\/a> alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GretaThunberg\">Greta Thunberg<\/a>; conservationists like Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pashoopakshee.com\/hargila-army#:~:text=Pioneered%20the%20Hargila%20Army%2C%20an,Hargila%20in%20Assamese)%20from%20extinction.\">Purnima Devi Barma<\/a>n, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2021\/12\/7\/the-approach-to-conservation-in-africa-needs-to-change\">Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/janegoodall.org\/\">Jane Goodall<\/a>; and policymakers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/web-features\/wangari-maathai-woman-trees-dies#:~:text=Wangari%20Maathai%3A%20A%20pioneer%20in%20linking%20environmental%20protection%20with%20human%20rights.&amp;text=Kenya's%20Wangari%20Muta%20Maathai%2C%20the,promoting%20the%20environment%20and%20democracy.\">Wangari Maathai<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jacindaardern\/?hl=en\">Jacinda Ardern<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marinasilva?lang=en\">Marina Silva<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>All around the world, women play key roles in Greenpeace campaigns to prevent coal, oil and gas extraction. We\u2019re prioritising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0301421522001756\">carbon bombs<\/a> \u2013 sites with a potential for emissions that exceed 1.5 \u00b0C (34.7F) \u2013 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/a-year-after-russias-invasion-of-ukraine-a-global-fossil-fuels-bonanza-could-spark-conflicts-elsewhere\/#:~:text=to%20News%20%26%20Media-,A%20year%20after%20Russia's%20invasion%20of%20Ukraine%2C%20a%20global%20fossil,bonanza%20could%20spark%20conflicts%20elsewhere&amp;text=The%20answer%20to%20transitioning%20off,rehabilitate%20off%20poisonous%20fossil%20fuels.\">Permian Basin<\/a> in Texas and New Mexico and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/act\/woodside\">Western Australia<\/a>&#8216;s pristine oceans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Let\u2019s meet just a few of these women who, in solidarity with affected frontline communities, are working to stop new projects that would lock countries into <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-politics-new-york-city-climate-and-environment-antonio-guterres-eae595bc528caad4fa8b7da6fe3796f4\">climate wrecking extraction<\/a> for decades to come:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Edina_Ifticene?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edina Ifticene<\/a>, oil and gas campaigner at Greenpeace France<\/h3>\n\n<p>Along with 250 activists, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Edina_Ifticene?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Edina Ifticene<\/a> shut down the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders of TotalEnergies May 2022. Just look at the amazing women in Iran fighting for their existence. But of course, feminism and environmental activism remind us of the links between women and nature and the similarities between environmental destruction and the oppression of women both driven by the same power structures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/anitacosgrove\/?originalSubdomain=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Anita Cosgrove<\/a>, researcher for Greenpeace Australia Pacific&#8217;s Woodside campaign<\/h3>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/anitacosgrove\/?originalSubdomain=au\">Anita Cosgrove<\/a> holds a PhD in ecology, physiology and conservation. It includes my parents and family who live in India and have seen a sharp rise in the&nbsp; climate impacts affecting their daily lives including flooding that has severely damaged my grandparents\u2019 home and the pollution that has led to abysmal air quality levels that has deadly consequences for my family\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Libby, Greenpeace M\u00e9xico activist<\/h3>\n\n<p>Libby has been at the forefront of many of Greenpeace M\u00e9xico\u2019s actions and campaigns calling for a shift away from fossil fuels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201dRaising my voice as an activist in different areas not only gave me reasons to fight, but also great and real reasons to grow as a person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cBeing a woman and an activist at the same time carries a lot of strength in the world. That is not the case for many of my sisters who fight across the world for themselves, their communities and the planet.
