{"id":58690,"date":"2023-03-16T06:28:08","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T05:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=58690"},"modified":"2023-03-16T09:07:24","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T08:07:24","slug":"bytedance-owner-of-tiktok-commits-to-100-renewable-energy-by-2030-greenpeace-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/58690\/bytedance-owner-of-tiktok-commits-to-100-renewable-energy-by-2030-greenpeace-response\/","title":{"rendered":"ByteDance, owner of TikTok, commits to 100% renewable energy by 2030 &#8211; Greenpeace response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Beijing, China \u2013 ByteDance, the Chinese internet company that owns TikTok and other social networking apps, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bytedance.com\/en\/news\/64101e0917013dda5be8acc6\">announced its commitment<\/a> to 100% renewable energy in its global operations by 2030 and to be net zero by 2030, reducing emissions by 90% by 2030.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace East Asia Climate and Energy Project Manager, Ruiqi Ye said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cFinally, ByteDance is catching up with peers like Meta and Tencent, and we are thrilled to see a major internet company taking the reins in becoming sustainable. But to come through on this commitment, ByteDance needs to quickly scale up its renewable energy procurement. How ByteDance scales up renewable energy procurement around Asia will be key to its success. In addition, these commitments so far only cover ByteDance\u2019s own operations, and exclude the value chain, such as its suppliers. In reality, this probably accounts for most of ByteDance\u2019s total emissions. We\u2019re looking forward to seeing an emissions reduction plan for ByteDance\u2019s whole value chain, which the company plans to produce later this year, and we also ultimately hope for full disclosure of emissions data, and seeing regular, concrete updates of its progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/press\/7467\/bytedance-among-lowest-scoring-companies\/\">report released last year<\/a> by Greenpeace East Asia that ranked China\u2019s cloud providers, ByteDance was among the lowest scoring companies in terms of its climate commitments and renewable energy use.
