Plastic pollution has flooded our planet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/47759\/investigation-finds-plastic-from-the-uk-and-germany-illegally-dumped-in-turkey\/\">harming people\u2019s health<\/a>, accelerating social injustice, destroying biodiversity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/59084\/rising-emissions-rising-waters-filmmaker-chronicles-the-human-impacts-of-pakistans-2022-flood-crisis\/\">fueling the climate crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastic is just fossil fuel in disguise<\/h2>\n\n<p>The fact is that 99% of plastic is made from oil and gas \u2014&nbsp; and Big Oil like Exxonmobil are contributing to making more and more plastic each year. According to new research released a few weeks ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/plastic-consumption-course-nearly-double-by-2050-research-2023-02-27\/\">plastic use in G20 nations will almost double by 2050<\/a>. If industry has its way, <a href=\"http:\/\/greenpeace.org\/usa\/key-facts-on-plastic-and-climate\/\">plastic production could actually double<\/a> well before that.<\/p>\n\n<p>The full lifecycle of plastic harms livelihoods and the climate every step of the way. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/21014\/new-report-finds-entire-lifecycle-of-plastics-a-threat-to-human-health\/\">Plastics also pose distinct risks to human health<\/a> at every stage of their lifecycle, arising from harmful chemicals released during raw material extraction and manufacturing, exposure to chemical additives during use, and the pollution of the environment and our food that can result as plastics enter the waste stream.<\/p>\n\n<p>Despite all of this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/11\/897692090\/how-big-oil-misled-the-public-into-believing-plastic-would-be-recycled\">Big Oil, in league with big brands<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/aug\/01\/how-unilever-plastic-sachets-became-a-toxic-scourge-oceans\">Unilever<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestle.com\/media\/news\/launch-bio-based-lids-scoops-renewable-resource\"> Nestl\u00e9<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocacolaep.com\/gb\/news\/2022\/coca-cola-begins-introduction-of-attached-caps-across-entire-portfolio-to-boost-collection-and-recylcing-and-help-to-prevent-litter\/\">Coca-Cola<\/a>, continues to promote false solutions and a throwaway single-use model where \u2018convenience\u2019 and corporate profits outweigh the cost to our communities.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2019\/04\/e49db9a1-gp0stt74n-1024x683.jpg\" title=\"Activists March at Nestle HQ in the Philippines. \u00a9 Basilio H. Sepe \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Global Plastics Treaty is a once in a lifetime opportunity<\/h2>\n\n<p>But the good news is that we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to end the plastic crisis. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/57636\/first-plastics-treaty-negotiation-what-you-need-to-know\/\">negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty began in 2022<\/a> and we now have until 2024 to ensure it is strong and ambitious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>To end the plastic and climate crisis, we need a Global Plastics Treaty that will:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>End plastic pollution across the whole life-cycle to protect the environment and human health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cap and phase down of plastic production, including a phase out virgin plastic production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure a just and inclusive transition to a low-carbon, zero-waste, toxic-free,&nbsp; reuse-based economy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be firmly rooted in a human rights-based approach that reduces inequalities between people, prioritizes human health, protects the environment and centers justice and the interests of communities most affected<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4BI1YkPW8xc\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/4BI1YkPW8xc\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"4BI1YkPW8xc\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From the surge of Black Friday plastic packaging, to the throwaway plastic that we see everyday, Plastic is everywhere. In less than 100 years of production, it has worked its way into every corner of the planet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Together with our allies and supporters, we demand a treaty that will keep oil and gas used to produce plastic in the ground and put an end to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/47293\/coca-cola-its-time-to-stop-your-pollution-at-source\/\">big polluters&#8217; relentless plastic production<\/a>.
