In some cities, cycle paths are also accessible for people using wheelchairs or mobility scooters to get around, enabling people living with and without disabilities to join in social rides.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Chris Grodotzki \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Left behind: Marginalised communities and public transport<\/h2>\n\n<p>Many studies back this up and show how issues of race, gender, income, and disability play a central role in people&#8217;s ability to move.<\/p>\n\n<p>In urban areas within the US, for example, workers of colour are overrepresented among public transit commuters with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.demos.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/Public%20Transit.pdf\">\u201clong commutes\u201d<\/a>, meaning commutes of 60 minutes or longer.<\/p>\n\n<p>In a survey conducted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nossasaopaulo.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/viver_em_sp_mobilidade_apresentacao_2018.pdf\">Sao Paulo, Brazil<\/a>, 34% of respondents said they &#8220;always&#8221; or &#8220;sometimes&#8221; missed medical appointments because of the cost of transportation, 26% stopped attending school or university, and 51% stopped going to leisure activities. The survey also found a very clear profile among the commuters who said they &#8220;always&#8221; or &#8220;sometimes&#8221; missed such appointments: black and brown women, with low income and only basic education.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/urbandevelopment\/publication\/handbook-for-gender-inclusive-urban-planning-and-design\">Commuting challenges for women<\/a> are also significantly related to safety. In <a href=\"https:\/\/womenmobilize.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Gender-and-mobility_report-komprimiert.pdf\">focus group interviews<\/a>, women from different geographies expressed concerns and fears around waiting at bus stops and train stations, particularly in the evenings. The data shows that, in most cases, how we move is not only an individual choice but is also determined by structural factors,&nbsp;like poverty, systemic racism, and transport planning that doesn&#8217;t prioritise women&#8217;s safety.<\/p>\n\n<p>People can be restricted by inaccessible transport, affecting their household income, or their healthcare, or social networks. The research suggests that mobility patterns continue to underpin gender roles and other inequalities.<\/p>\n\n<p>An affordable and accessible transport system that meets everyone\u2019s needs would be transformational, allowing individuals more freedom to socialise and access job opportunities, education and health services.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making transport, and transport decision-making, more inclusive and accessible would benefit us all:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Affordable and accessible public infrastructure would guarantee we meet the needs of the entire population, especially the most vulnerable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It should improve safety, preventing racism and violence against women and the LGBTQIA+ community.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It would make sure decision making on transport takes account of the different perspectives of all those who need and want to use it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public space should prioritise people and not cars, providing spaces where individuals can meet, talk, play and create a sense of community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><em>Nerea Ram\u00edrez Piris is Ecofeminism Coordinator at Greenpeace Spain.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transport systems are typically designed for men, and service the journeys they want to make.
