Cyclone Gorky, which hit Bangladesh in 1991, caused around 140,000 deaths, of which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212096320300279\">90% were women<\/a>. One of the world&#8217;s biggest coal power plants is located in this city of 275 million population, and threatens the health of women and children of Central Taiwan. <div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Ai-Ju Wang \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/what-we-do\/leadership-and-political-participation\/facts-and-figures#_edn5\">According to the UN<\/a>, there were only 26 countries where women served as Heads of State and\/or Government as of January 2024. At the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power would not be reached for another 130 years. In addition, women globally held only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-03\/Women-in-politics-2023-en.pdf\">11% of ministerial positions<\/a> responsible for energy, natural resource fuels and mining as of January 2023. <\/p>\n\n<p>The level of representation is even lower for gender minorities. In the United States, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/understanding-the-transgender-community\">2 million people identify as transgender<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/nonbinary-lgbtq-adults-us\/\">1.2 million as non-binary<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/01\/11\/118th-congress-breaks-record-for-lesbian-gay-and-bisexual-representation\/\">there are no known representatives in the Congress that identify as trans or belonging to a gender minority<\/a> and globally there have been only a handful of trans or non-binary ministers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gendered and intersectional impacts of climate change<\/h3>\n\n<p>Women are at a <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/five-reasons-why-climate-action-needs-women#:~:text=Women%20often%20face%20higher%20risks,for%20the%20young%20and%20elderly.\">higher risk<\/a> of being impacted by climate change due to poverty, cultural norms, and the gendered roles and responsibilities. Even in the richest nations, women are at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/58938\/how-the-energy-crisis-is-reversing-gender-equality\/\">higher risk of energy poverty<\/a>, which can have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.enpor.eu\/guest-article-women-are-highly-affected-by-energy-poverty-but-strong-in-fighting-it\/\"> serious health and wellbeing consequences<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The situation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/60078\/impact-climate-crisis-lgbtqia2s-pride-month\/\">more dire for gender minorities<\/a> because of systemic discrimination and barriers such exclusion, isolation, and unreliable work, in addition to discrimination and violence they may face during disasters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1080\/0966369X.2016.1263438#:~:text=Most%20concur%20that%20sexual%20and,available%20to%20men%20and%20women.\">which can affect them more severely than both cisgender men and women<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2024\/03\/c5348f24-gp1sybs5.jpg\" title=\"Pride Parade in Bangkok. \u00a9 Panumas Sanguanwong \/ Greenpeace\" alt=\"Pride Parade in Bangkok. \u00a9 Panumas Sanguanwong \/ Greenpeace\" class=\"wp-image-66055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2024\/03\/c5348f24-gp1sybs5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2024\/03\/c5348f24-gp1sybs5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2024\/03\/c5348f24-gp1sybs5-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2024\/03\/c5348f24-gp1sybs5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2024\/03\/c5348f24-gp1sybs5-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Greenpeace activists hold placards with messages that support climate justice and gender justice in Bangkok Pride parade.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Panumas Sanguanwong \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>While it is clear that climate change impacts women and gender minorities disproportionately, these impacts are not felt equally across the intersection of identities due to varying social and economic circumstances.<\/p>\n\n<p>A woman from the Global North may not feel the impacts of climate change as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/29297\/women-climate-disaster-africa-floods-droughts-extreme-weather\/\">a woman from the Global South<\/a>. Just as a woman who belongs to an ethnic majority may not face the additional challenges faced by a woman belonging to an ethnic minority. For example, studies have shown that having gender diversity is more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/csr.1775\">improve a firm\u2019s environmental performance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/10.1080\/09644016.2019.1609156\">women are more likely to support environmental legislation<\/a> than men. Women also <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/women-favour-climate-actions-that-benefit-future-generations-more-than-men-new-study-224455\">favour climate actions that benefit future generations<\/a>, including investing in it, more than men. Gender minorities, on the other hand, have <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/soin.12534\">more awareness and concern for climate change<\/a> than both genders.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is not to further burden women and gender minorities by making them \u201cenvironmental champions\u201d to fix the problems created by a heteropatriarchal system. The students take their new skills home and give their villages clean energy.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Greenpeace \/ Emma Stoner<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Gender minorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sei.org\/perspectives\/climate-justice-gender-sexual-minorities\/\">have unique resources, skills and knowledge to deal with disasters<\/a>, such as strong social ties that facilitate raising emergency funds, collecting and distributing relief, and organising evacuation centres, among others that can benefit the whole community.<\/p>\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13552070215902\">researcher who observed the Kyoto Protocol negotiations<\/a> in 1997 reported that the few women who had leading roles were able to influence the climate negotiations positively due to their specific networking and interpersonal skills, as well as their long term thinking and planning. At last year\u2019s COP28, <a href=\"https:\/\/genderclimatetracker.org\/participation-stats\/quick-analysis\">only 35% of the participants were women<\/a>, the same percentage as ten years ago, and 77% of the delegations had more men than women. <\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/documents\/611303\">A report<\/a> from UNFCCC on COP 27, where just 29% of heads and deputy heads of delegations were women, shows that women were more involved in administrative positions rather than technical ones and that men were overrepresented in decision-making positions and had more speaking time. There are no official figures on the representation of gender minorities in COP.<\/p>\n\n<p>Gender diversity, equality and mainstreaming play a crucial role to achieve ambitious and fair climate action. We simply do not have time to wait to achieve equality and successfully address the pressing issues like climate change without the valuable skills, knowledge and perspectives that women and gender minorities can bring. It is time that we push truly for equality and inclusivity, not only for the benefit of women and gender minorities, but also for men and our planet!<\/p>\n\n<p><em>Dr. Mehmet B\u00f6r\u00fchan Bulut is an Energy Analyst with Greenpeace International.
