And just like any other fossil fuel, it puts our safety at risk. Fossil gas is a massive contributor to the climate crisis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Fossil gas consists mainly of methane, a greenhouse gas <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/carbon-management-and-fossil-fuels\/methane-emissions_en\">84 times<\/a> more powerful than CO<sub>2<\/sub> over a 20-year period. When burned to produce energy, fossil gas emits CO<sub>2<\/sub> &#8211; another greenhouse gas that drives climate chaos. Gas is already responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/data-tools\/greenhouse-gas-emissions-from-energy-data-explorer\">22%<\/a> of global greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>To add to that, fossil gas is prone to leakage: methane leaks from wells, pipelines, LNG tankers and terminals or refineries are so common and massive that scientists say they pose &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/mar\/06\/revealed-1000-super-emitting-methane-leaks-risk-triggering-climate-tipping-points\">a grave threat to humanity<\/a>&#8220;. Fossil gas drives inequality, violence and conflicts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>While the energy industry made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/apr\/28\/exxonmobil-chevron-record-profits\">record profits<\/a> from the massive rise in gas prices in 2022, citizens around the world suffered much higher costs for heating and electricity, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/global-economy-2023-how-countries-around-the-world-are-tackling-the-cost-of-living-crisis-196740\">persistent inflation<\/a> that pushed up the prices of basic goods and services. High and volatile gas prices, especially when combined with inadequate housing, trap people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/pub\/pdf\/scpwps\/ecb.wp2905~6b246d6bf4.en.pdf\">poverty<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesc.europa.eu\/en\/news-media\/press-releases\/energy-poverty-42-million-people-eu-cannot-afford-heat-their-homes-adequately\">energy poverty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Gas also fuels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investigate-europe.eu\/posts\/how-gas-causes-geopolitical-conflicts-an-explainer\">conflicts<\/a>, giving geopolitical advantages to resource-rich countries at the expense of nations that need gas imports. The group visited sights in the Permian Basin area and looked at leaking methane facilities.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Tim Aubry \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Fossil gas extraction infrastructure destroys entire areas and its inhabitants<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Gas exploration and gas infrastructure such as platforms, pipelines, LNG terminals or refineries are particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/earthjustice.org\/article\/biodiversity-crisis-fossil-fuels#:~:text=At%20every%20stage%20of%20their,the%20destruction%20of%20critical%20habitats\">damaging to nature<\/a>: deforestation, release of harmful pollutants, pollution of soil, wetlands or seabeds, noise from seismic surveys that endanger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/10\/27\/greenpeace-calls-on-greece-to-halt-gas-exploration-citing-threat-to-wildlife\">whales and dolphins<\/a>\u2026 These devastating impacts obviously exacerbate the biodiversity crisis, but also the climate crisis even further by damaging already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/romania\/articol\/9477\/de-ce-este-periculoasa-exploatarea-de-gaze-din-marea-neagra\/\">fragile ecosystems<\/a> that would otherwise store CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/fighting-climate-chaos\/issues\/fracking\/\">fracking<\/a>, a controversial method of extracting gas that is particularly polluting and harmful, <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/fracking-study-health\/\">possibly leading<\/a> to low birth weights, asthma, lymphoma and other diseases.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gaz de schiste : les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts de cette ressource qu&#039;on importe en France | Reportage\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IkO56jyz2-c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Fossil gas pollution is responsible for deaths and diseases<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Burning fossil gas emits nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other toxins responsible for air pollution. Exposure to elevated levels of these pollutants can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/resources\/environmental-impacts-natural-gas\">adverse health effects<\/a>, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Recent estimates put the number of deaths from fossil fuel air pollution at <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmj-2023-077784\">5 million per year<\/a>. At home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-health-risks-of-gas-stoves-explained\/\">recent studies<\/a> suggest that gas stoves put people at greater risk of respiratory disease than previously thought.<\/p>\n\n<p>Fossil-fuelled global warming also causes death and disease. It is mainly used for cooking, heating buildings, power generation and in the industrial sector. Despite what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/67068\/6-lies-fossil-fuel-companies-tell-to-continue-business-as-usual\/\">fossil fuels companies<\/a> would have us believe, gas puts our safety at risk by driving inequalities and violence, fuelling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/jan\/09\/2023-record-world-hottest-climate-fossil-fuel\">climate chaos<\/a>, increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.context.news\/climate-risks\/cut-fossil-fuel-use-to-save-millions-of-lives-health-experts-say\">health problems<\/a> and accidents, destroying our precious <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/leave-it-in-the-ground-how-fossil-fuel-extraction-affects-biodiversity-19484\">biodiversity<\/a> and polluting our environment.<\/p>\n\n<p>But the good news is: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1364032121002264#sec7\">100% renewable energy systems<\/a> exist and work. Gas can be phased out by replacing it with renewables through electrification, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/multiple-benefits-of-energy-efficiency\">reducing overall energy demand<\/a> through efficiency and sufficiency, and developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960148119302319\">energy storage and demand flexibility<\/a>. It\u2019s time to speed up the transition.
