Today is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WorldMeatFreeDay?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#WorldMeatFreeDay,<\/a> a great time to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmeatfreeday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">think about how the everyday choices we make about the food we eat can<\/a> impact our health and the health of the planet.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/publications\/reports\/slaughtering-the-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deforestation<\/a> to water pollution and climate change, the mark that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/campaigns\/agriculture\/problem\/More-Meat-Threatens-The-Planet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">industrial animal agriculture<\/a> leaves on the environment is huge.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, livestock production is responsible for around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/197608\/icode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">14% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/a> \u2013 that&#8217;s about the same as emissions from all road vehicles on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Animal agriculture is the largest source of the most powerful greenhouse gasses: methane and nitrous oxide. We are already living beyond our planetary means. Feeding a growing and more affluent global population of at least nine billion by 2050 simply isn&#8217;t possible unless we make some changes.<\/p>\n<p>We need a \u201cless is better\u201d approach to meat eating. That&#8217;s where World Meat Free Day can make a difference; by raising awareness of how simple, small changes can start to have a positive global influence. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmeatfreeday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Meat Free Day<\/a> website has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmeatfreeday.com\/sustainability-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainability calculator<\/a> that shows how meat-free meals can have an immediate impact on carbon emissions and water usage.<\/p>\n<p>If 10,000 people go meat free for just one day, they save:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The CO2 equivalent of driving a car 288,917 kilometres.<\/li>\n<li>Enough water for one person for 93 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just imagine the impact if your whole family, town or workplace did the same. Or, imagine if you kept up Meat Free Mondays for a whole year, or even ate no animal products every day! If you wish to continue eating meat, you can commit to eating less and use the money you save to choose better quality meat &#8211; produced to higher environmental and animal welfare standards.<\/p>\n<p>Every meal matters for the planet.
