This is huge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\">From activists who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/blog\/Blogentry\/the-crossing-exposing-shells-monster-arctic-o\/blog\/52486\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scaled<\/a> Shell\u2019s rig in April or who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/jul\/29\/activists-hang-from-bridge-portland-block-shells-arctic-oil-vessel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stopped<\/a> one of Shell\u2019s ships this July, to the millions of people <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/greenpeace\/people-vs-shell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all over the world<\/a> who signed petitions, paraded with polar bears, shared stories and helped organise for real environmental justice, this is YOUR victory. The company has already spent upwards of US$7 billion trying to find oil in the Alaskan Arctic, but the environmental costs of Arctic oil are even higher.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\">In the US, President Obama\u2019s own administration estimates that there would be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boem.gov\/shell-chukchi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75 percent<\/a>&nbsp;chance of a disastrous oil spill if Shell got what it originally wanted.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-14382\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2015\/09\/56bf8b51-gp0stp83x_web_size.jpg\" title=\"Shell protest in Unalaska<div class=\"credit icon-left\">  \u00a9 Mark Meyer \/ Greenpeace<\/div> \u00a9 Mark Meyer \/ Greenpeace&#8221; alt=&#8221;Shell protest in Unalaska<div class=\"credit icon-left\">  \u00a9 Mark Meyer \/ Greenpeace<\/div> \u00a9 Mark Meyer \/ Greenpeace&#8221; class=&#8221;wp-image-14382&#8243;\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shell protest in Unalaska<div class=\"credit icon-left\">  \u00a9 Mark Meyer \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"normal\">And it\u2019s not just the risk of an oil spill that\u2019s alarming. The Arctic acts as the world\u2019s air conditioner by reflecting sunlight off sea ice and keeping the oceans cool. But that sea ice is melting, and the region is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\">Climate change in the Arctic is already leading to people being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2015\/02\/24\/the-remote-alaskan-village-that-needs-to-be-relocated-due-to-climate-change\/?utm_term=.cb802c18fca1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">displaced from their homes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kerstin.langenberger.photography\/photos\/a.463697036975575.115901.429056113773001\/1045109095501030\/?type=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polar bears<\/a> starving and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2015\/09\/arctic-mosquitoes-and-the-chaos-of-climate-change\/405322\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mosquito swarms<\/a> getting so huge that they have become deadly for caribou. Drilling for and burning more fossil fuels is the exact wrong response to climate change.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\"><strong>Why Shell called it quits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\">Shell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/sep\/28\/shell-ceases-alaska-arctic-drilling-exploratory-well-oil-gas-disappoints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found evidence<\/a> of oil in the Arctic, but it still decided not to drill. The Financial Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/19de519e-65a8-11e5-a28b-50226830d644#axzz3n4XGXzOK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that Shell has privately admitted that it didn\u2019t expect so much public opposition. All year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethearctic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comments poured in<\/a> to the US government from around the world as millions of people asked President Obama\u2019s administration to pull the brakes on Shell\u2019s drilling.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\"><strong>It wasn\u2019t President Obama who showed real climate leadership here. It was you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\">Together, you turned what the oil industry hoped would be a small business story into front page headlines. Together, we demonstrated that people have the power to fight companies and governments who consistently value corporate profits over the health of our planet.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\">The fight isn\u2019t over. While Shell has backed away from the Arctic, the region still doesn\u2019t have the protection it needs. We will continue working to keep Shell and all other oil companies out of the Arctic for good and to demand a global sanctuary in this fragile region that will protect it from further destruction.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethearctic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Let\u2019s turn this victory into permanent protection for the Arctic.
