Jakarta, Indonesia \u2013 Earlier this week, Greenpeace International published the Under the Eagle\u2019s Shadow<\/a> report, detailing its multi-year investigation into companies found to have wide-ranging connections to Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), a major international pulp and palm oil group which is acknowledged to be controlled by Indonesian tycoon Sukanto Tanoto.<\/p>\n\n

RGE has published a response<\/a>, regarding which Kiki Taufik, Head of Greenpeace Indonesia\u2019s Forest Campaign said:<\/p>\n\n

\u201cRGE\u2019s brief 2 page response to Greenpeace International\u2019s 400 page report aims to deflect without expressly denying the report\u2019s key conclusion that there is strong evidence that 194 Indonesian and 63 overseas holding companies examined are shadow companies under common control with RGE\/Tanoto. The report painstakingly documents this evidence, and the accusation about the 194 Indonesian and 63 overseas companies has never been made before, contrary to RGE\u2019s claim in its response.<\/p>\n\n

RGE does however repeat statements made after previous reports concerning two Indonesian resources companies PT Phoenix Resources International and PT Mayawana Persada, denying they are under common control with RGE\/Tanoto. <\/p>\n\n

By incorrectly framing the report\u2019s main argument as being about a \u2018shadow supply chain\u2019, RGE\u2019s response appears to be an attempt to shift the focus away from the actual question of concealed corporate control. We urge banks and brands to evaluate the detailed sources, all included as links in the report, and decide for themselves whether the companies should be considered part of the RGE\/Tanoto group.”<\/p>\n\n
