Because, without the right to express ourselves freely, we cannot make that positive change.<\/p>\n<p>More than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/authors-pledge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100 authors<\/a> have pledged to defend free speech and those who peacefully protect the world\u2019s forests. This pledge follows <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/resolutelawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two multimillion dollar lawsuits<\/a> filed by Resolute Forest Products, a Canadian company, to silence Greenpeace and Stand.earth\u2019s exposure of its controversial logging in the boreal forest.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what some of the authors have to say:<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 169px;\" width=\"995\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px; float: left;\" title=\"Margaret Atwood\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/136223_242997.jpg\" alt=\"Margaret Atwood\" width=\"332\" height=\"332\" \/><\/td>\n<td><strong>Margaret Atwood\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Canadian author of The Handmaid\u2019s Tale, recently dramatised in the must-watch television show of the year.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">In the story, all but the most powerful women are forbidden to write and are denied access to books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe endings of The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale, 1984 and Brave New World are written. Ours is not. This is a chance to stand up for freedom f speech, the freedom to advocate for change, and the freedom to question authority, and to strengthen their protection under law. It`s not just about the satisfaction you get from speaking your mind, it`s also about telling uncomfortable truths that need to be heard, and Greenpeace has been incredibly successful at exposing what the powers that be want to keep secret. But this case goes beyond Greenpeace to threaten very whistle-blower and watchdog with information that the rich and powerful want suppressed. If Resolute Forest Products manages to shut Greenpeace up with its heavy-handed legal tactics, we ALL lose.
