{"id":75975,"date":"2025-06-25T20:36:44","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T18:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/?p=75975"},"modified":"2025-09-10T15:54:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T13:54:15","slug":"amazon-guardians-a-living-example-of-real-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/75975\/amazon-guardians-a-living-example-of-real-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon Guardians: A living example of real solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last May, Greenpeace Brazil returned to the ancestral waters of the <strong>Juru\u00e1 River \u2014 the most curvy river in the world \u2014<\/strong> to spotlight something the world urgently needs to see: real, proven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/74932\/how-support-real-forest-solutions-avoid-false-ones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forest solutions already thriving in the heart of the Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Twenty-five years ago, the <strong>Middle Juru\u00e1 region, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas,<\/strong> was being devastated by deforestation. Today, it stands as a<strong> global example of sustainability<\/strong>, thanks to the strength, resistance, and organisation of<strong> Indigenous and riverside communities<\/strong> who protect and live with the forest.<\/p>\n\n<p>These communities are not just protecting nature \u2014 they are implementing successful <strong>climate and biodiversity solutions<\/strong>, rooted in <strong>traditional knowledge<\/strong> and <strong>community governance<\/strong>. But to scale these solutions, they need <strong>direct and adequate funding<\/strong>, without red tape, and that reaches the ground.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe want to echo to the world that solutions already exist in the Amazon and other tropical forests, but they need direct financial support that reaches the territories,\u201d <\/em>says R\u00f4mulo Batista, Greenpeace Brazil\u2019s Forest Solutions campaigner. <em>\u201cCOP30 will be a decisive moment to ensure this support actually reaches the people who care for the forest.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Amazon\u2019s Forest Solutions in Action<\/h2>\n\n<p>Over nearly 20 days, Greenpeace Brazil visited 7 riverside communities and 4 Deni Indigenous villages. What we found were inspiring activities that simultaneously generate income and preserve the forest \u2014 true \u201cforest solutions\u201d in practice:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>seed collection from native trees like <strong>andiroba <\/strong>and <strong>murumuru<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sustainable extraction of <strong>rubber<\/strong>, <strong>a\u00e7a\u00ed<\/strong>, <strong>honey<\/strong>, and <strong>copaiba <\/strong>oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>community-based management of <strong>turtles <\/strong>and <strong>fish<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>small-scale <strong>agroforestry <\/strong>and traditional <strong>cassava <\/strong>cultivation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div data-hydrate=\"planet4-blocks\/gallery\" carousel-wrap \"><\/section><\/div>\n<p>These are time-honoured practices that integrate socio-biodiversity, social technologies, and ancestral knowledge \u2014 <strong>combining economy, culture, and conservation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The oil extracted from seeds, for instance, is sustainably sourced by cosmetic companies. Rubber is traded to produce sneakers. Sustainable fishery and turtle management has increased populations of <a href=\"https:\/\/institutojurua.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pirarucu and river turtles by 50 times in the last 15 years<\/a>, restoring entire ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n<p>But despite their success, these solutions lack the<strong> necessary financial incentives <\/strong>to improve local livelihoods and further strengthen forest protection \u2014 a crucial step in the global fight against climate change.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearly 2 Million Hectares Conserved \u2014 By the People<\/h2>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/who-killed-chico-mendes-1708804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Chico Mendes<\/strong><\/a> once said about the Middle Juru\u00e1 communities\u2019 struggle: <em>\u201cFor the Juru\u00e1 people, the protected land will be their greatest celebration \u2014 an answer to their cries. Like the song of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XsgXA_SQ7ws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>uirapuru<\/em><\/a><em>, it will signal blessings and fortune.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>That prophecy has come true. Today, the Middle Juru\u00e1 is a mosaic of protected areas, legally recognised and community-managed \u2014 totaling <strong>almost 2 million hectares of conserved Amazon rainforest<\/strong>: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/icmbio\/pt-br\/assuntos\/biodiversidade\/unidade-de-conservacao\/unidades-de-biomas\/amazonia\/lista-de-ucs\/resex-medio-jurua\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00e9dio Juru\u00e1 Extractive Reserve<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sema.am.gov.br\/reserva-de-desenvolvimento-sustentavel-de-uacari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uacari Sustainable Development Reserve<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/pib.socioambiental.org\/pt\/Povo:Deni#:~:text=A%20%C3%81rea%20Ind%C3%ADgena%20Deni%20foi,e%20per%C3%ADmetro%20de%20750%20Km\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deni Indigenous Territory<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Together, <strong>this area is larger than Luxembourg and Jamaica combined<\/strong> \u2014 living proof that it\u2019s possible to thrive from a standing forest, with economic activities that respect nature and dignity.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Exploitation to Autonomy<\/h2>\n\n<p>Until the 1990s, <a href=\"https:\/\/asproc.org.br\/a-asproc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local and Indigenous communities endured <strong>near-slavery conditions<\/strong><\/a> under debt bondage systems. They were denied access to education, exploited for their labour, and watched their forest be plundered.<\/p>\n\n<p>That changed when the people came together to form <a href=\"https:\/\/asproc.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ASPROC <\/strong>(Association of Producers of Carauari)<\/a>, the region\u2019s largest grassroots organisation. Their unity, along with support from allies like the <a href=\"https:\/\/meb.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Base Education Movement (<strong>MEB<\/strong>)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimi.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CIMI<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amazonianativa.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>OPAN<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cnsbrasil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CNS<\/strong><\/a>, and the<strong> <\/strong><a illegal logging and deforestation, promoting non-polluting rubber production and assisting in the self-demarcation of Deni Indigenous lands.<\/p>\n\n<p>More than 25 years later, we found a transformed reality: the seeds of resistance have grown into trees of hope. He earned the nickname after astonishing visitors by treating all their ailments with earth clay \u2014 a testament to the ancestral knowledge rooted in the forest.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forests Are Worth More Standing \u2014 It\u2019s Time to Fund the Guardians<\/h2>\n\n<p>Despite decades of progress, the communities of Middle Juru\u00e1 still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatepolicyinitiative.org\/pt-br\/seeking-ideas-to-unlock-finance-for-high-integrity-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>lack direct access to the funding<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>they need to improve living conditions and scale their forest solutions. COP30 must be a turning point to channel real money to those truly protecting tropical forests \u2014 in the Amazon, Africa, and Asia.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace advocates for robust, transparent, and inclusive financial<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/74529\/the-tropical-forest-forever-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>mechanisms like the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF)<\/strong><\/a>, which proposes payment per hectare of forest conserved.
