Here&#8217;s what some have said:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Proctor and Gamble<\/h3>\n<p>The American company, which owns products such as Pantene, Oral-B, and Olay have said their <a href=\"http:\/\/us.pg.com\/our-brands\/product-safety\/ingredient-safety\/microbeads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cgoal is to remove plastic microbeads from all our cleansers and toothpastes by 2017.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an email response to Greenpeace East Asia, Jack McAneny, Director of Sustainability at Procter &amp; Gamble said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn reviewing your report we recognized that we have an opportunity to better clarify our microbead definition and that our commitment is to remove plastic microbeads (we will replace the term \u201cpolyethylene\u201d with \u201cplastic microbeads\u201d in our commitment to be more clear).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14218\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14218\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/02\/05f30809-gp0stptq6_medium_res.jpg\" alt=\"Dr David Santillo in Exeter Laboratory \u00a9 Vanessa Miles \/ Greenpeace\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/02\/05f30809-gp0stptq6_medium_res.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/02\/05f30809-gp0stptq6_medium_res-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/02\/05f30809-gp0stptq6_medium_res-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/02\/05f30809-gp0stptq6_medium_res-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2018\/02\/05f30809-gp0stptq6_medium_res-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr David Santillo is testing for microbeads, Greenpeace Science Lab, Exeter University.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>2. Shiseido<\/h3>\n<p>The Japanese company that owns hair and makeup brands like Nars, Tsubaki and Bare Minerals have since made a public commitment saying that they will globally replace products containing microbeads <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shiseidogroup.com\/csr\/env\/management.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cno later than 2018 depending on the characteristics of the products\u201d<\/a>, as they \u201crecognize the need due to environmental risks and such.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Shiseido did not publicly disclose any commitment to phasing out microbeads.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Amway<\/h3>\n<p>In an email response to Greenpeace East Asia, Julie Wu from the Corporate Relations Division at Amway Taiwan has said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAmway will use bio-degradable ingredients to replace microbeads from Oct 1 2016 in order to protect the environment. The &#8220;Artistry Essentials Polishing Scrub&#8221; is the only product which contains microbeads, among Amway&#8217;s 450+ products. Other products do not contain this ingredient.\u201d (translated from Chinese)<\/em><\/p>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/37t0pfeLTYE\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"37t0pfeLTYE\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<h3>4. LG Household and Healthcare<\/h3>\n<p>After the Greenpeace East Asia report was released that ranked LG H&amp;H weak on transparency, it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgcare.com\/global\/manage\/product\/product.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">immediately announced<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLG H&amp;H agrees to opinions of global NGOs and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that marine pollution, caused by microbeads, may destroy marine ecosystem and also potentially affect human beings.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They have committed to \u201cstop using [microbeads] in facial scrubs and other personal washing products in domestic and overseas markets by the end of 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14219\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14219\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14219\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2016\/08\/5dd37bdc-gp0stpx07_medium_res.jpg\" alt=\"Products Containing Microbeads \u00a9 The 5 Gyres Institute\" width=\"1200\" height=\"885\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2016\/08\/5dd37bdc-gp0stpx07_medium_res.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2016\/08\/5dd37bdc-gp0stpx07_medium_res-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2016\/08\/5dd37bdc-gp0stpx07_medium_res-768x566.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2016\/08\/5dd37bdc-gp0stpx07_medium_res-1024x755.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2016\/08\/5dd37bdc-gp0stpx07_medium_res-461x340.jpg 461w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Products containing microbeads.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>5. KOSE<\/h3>\n<p>The Japanese company that has a large presence around Asia has committed to phase out microbeads in wash products by June 2018 at the latest. Plastic pollution is getting out of control and the evidence is clear \u2013 according to the World Economic Forum (WEF), by 2050 the world\u2019s oceans will contain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/by-2050-there-ll-be-more-plastic-than-fish-in-our-oceans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more plastic than fish<\/a>; microbeads are often <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/fish-microplastic-microbeads-perch-pike-food-marine-pollution-a7063161.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mistaken as food<\/a> for marine life; and researchers have recently shown that microplastics are capable of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/consumer-affairs\/microbeads-are-leaching-toxic-chemicals-into-fish-sparking-public-health-fears-20160816-gqtlpk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leaching and releasing toxic chemicals into the seafood we eat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace will continue to monitor the world&#8217;s biggest cosmetics and personal care product companies to track their microbead pledges, but we can\u2019t do it alone! We need governments to outlaw microbeads like they have done in the <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2015\/12\/30\/health\/obama-bans-microbeads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States<\/a>, with other governments such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/jun\/14\/nment-backs-microbeads-ban-george-eustice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK<\/a> (due 2017), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/taiwan\/archives\/2016\/06\/09\/2003648236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taiwan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiatimes.com\/health\/buzz\/india-has-finally-started-down-the-route-of-banning-microbeads-in-toiletries-253638.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/apr\/20\/senators-call-for-australia-to-ban-microbeads-to-protect-marine-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australia<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/technology\/microbeads-toxic-substance-1.3558399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada<\/a> &#8211; which has officially declared it as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcinet.ca\/en\/2016\/06\/30\/canada-declares-plastic-microbeads-as-toxic-substance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201ctoxic\u201d<\/a> &#8211; following suit.<\/p>\n<p>Together we can work towards healthy oceans AND smooth skin by putting a major stop on the microbead.<\/p>\n<p><em>Taehyun Park is an Oceans Campaigner at Greenpeace East Asia<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">What you can do to ban the bead<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Check the list of ingredients before purchasing!
