According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrc.org\/en\/statement\/80-years-atomic-bomb-hiroshima-nagasaki-call-eliminate-nuclear-weapons\">registers of both atomic bombings&#8217; victims exceed 540,000<\/a>, including those who died after suffering from the long-term effects of radiation. This number continues to grow even now. Others survived, but at the cost of illness, trauma, social exclusion, or repeated miscarriages. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/71798\/press-release-greenpeace-salutes-nobel-peace-prize-laureates-nihon-hidankyos-role-in-making-nuclear-weapons-illegal\/\">memory, embodied by the <em>hibakusha<\/em><\/a> (the term used in Japan to designate the victims and survivors of these two tragedies), is today trampled by the logic of war that is regaining ground, including in so-called democratic states.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/70163\/greenpeace-comment-on-the-award-of-the-nobel-peace-prize-to-nihon-hidankyo\/\">the <em>Nihon Hidankyo<\/em> organisation, the historic voice of the<em> hibakusha<\/em>, received the Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>. But at the same time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/media\/press-release\/2025\/nuclear-risks-grow-new-arms-race-looms-new-sipri-yearbook-out-now\">world&#8217;s nuclear arsenals continue to grow<\/a>. In France, Emmanuel Macron recently declared that &#8220;to be free in this world, you must be feared,&#8221; adding a whiff of legitimacy to a discourse of power based on threats and fear.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gaza: the world on the brink of the abyss<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2025\/05\/9ab1762f-gp0su5mj5_medium-res-1200px-1024x683.jpg\" title=\"Greenpeace France, Oxfam France, Amnesty International France, Doctors of the World and Ek\u014d carried out a symbolic action in the heart of Paris, pouring red food coloring into the pool of the Fountain of the Innocents. In Gaza, Israeli military operations have wiped out families, destroyed hospitals and schools, and erased entire neighbourhoods from the map. Civilian infrastructure\u2014hospitals, schools, shelters, and displaced persons&#8217; camps\u2014has been systematically targeted, leaving no place safe. More than 60,000 people have been killed, according to the latest available figures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>With the Israeli government&#8217;s ongoing blockade of humanitarian aid, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/77483\/deliberate-starvation-of-palestinian-people-by-israel-in-gaza-must-stop\/\">deliberate use of hunger as a weapon of war<\/a> is taking a horrific toll. Survivors are being denied access to water, healthcare, and basic security, while famine tightens its grip.<\/p>\n\n<p>A genocide is underway, according to independent experts, NGOs and several international institutions. A genocide marked by an explicit intention of annihilation and a denial of international humanitarian law. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/68057\/scorched-earth-making-gaza-uninhabitable-for-generations-to-come\/\">genocide that also has dire consequences for ecosystems<\/a> and violates the right of many people to enjoy and live in a healthy environment.<\/p>\n\n<p>Elsewhere, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/73020\/three-years-on-russias-fossil-fuelled-invasion-of-ukraine-continues\/\">notably in Ukraine where Russia\u2019s full scale invasion of Ukraine continues to rage<\/a>, geopolitical tensions are intensifying, fuelled by a logic of armed confrontation and the weaponisation of nuclear deterrence. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/trump-orders-nuclear-submarines-moved-after-russian-provocative-statements-2025-08-02\/\">two nuclear submarines deployed by Donald Trump off the Russian coast on 1st August<\/a> are further testimony that the taboo on the use of nuclear weapons is fracturing.<\/p>\n\n<p>In light of this, the silence of nuclear powers and their refusal to question their own strategic doctrine is impossible to ignore. Worse still, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2025\/03\/04\/expansion-of-french-and-british-nuclear-umbrella-in-europe-is-attracting-interest_6738810_4.html\">the idea of Europeanising French deterrence is gaining ground<\/a>, in an attempt to transform a national strategy into a common doctrine. A headlong rush that fuels a spiral of insecurity, where every move provokes a reaction, where nuclear proliferation is inevitable. A dangerous spiral, which weakens world peace.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collective path to security<\/h2>\n\n<p>Contrary to this logic, a growing majority of states are choosing another path: that of multilateral disarmament, international law, and collective security. They too want to protect their &#8220;vital interests&#8221; which are constantly threatened by the potential consequences of deliberate, involuntary, accidental, or miscalculated use of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the last meeting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs-library.unoda.org\/Treaty_on_the_Prohibition_of_Nuclear_Weapons_-ThirdMeeting_of_States_Parties_(2025)\/%5BADVANCE_UNEDITED_VERSION%5D_TPNW_MSP_2025_7._Austria_(security_concerns).pdf\">States Parties to the TPNW, they made it clear: deterrence does not protect, it exposes.<\/a> In a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs-library.unoda.org\/Treaty_on_the_Prohibition_of_Nuclear_Weapons_-ThirdMeeting_of_States_Parties_(2025)\/TPNW_MSP3__Greenpeace_Statement_.pdf\">statement<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/webtv.un.org\/en\/asset\/k1o\/k1oairrali\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/webtv.un.org\/en\/asset\/k1o\/k1oairrali\">delivered<\/a> in plenary during the meeting, Greenpeace expressed its support for the Treaty, which made history by making it clear nuclear weapons are not only morally abhorrent, but also illegal under international law. Today, as inequalities soar, a handful of billionaires amass disproportionate economic power while fundamental freedoms are eroded. Our collective security is being undermined by a toxic alliance between extreme wealth and ultra-conservative political forces.<\/p>\n\n<p>This worrying groundswell affects many countries around the world, with governments prioritising military expansion and the deadly exploitation of fossil fuels over strengthening public services, developing renewable energy, and protecting us against climate change. Resisting this rampant militarism also means rejecting structural violence \u2014 and fighting for a more just world.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For peace, let us raise our voices<\/h2>\n\n<p>These commemorations of August 6 and 9, 1945, are an opportunity to raise our voices for peace. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/77486\/how-can-we-protect-peace-and-democracy-greenpeace-joins-a-united-call-to-action\/\">Greenpeace International has joined a global call to action led by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)<\/a>, which closely links peace, democracy, and social justice.
