Deadly heatwaves, drought and wildfires are hitting people around the world. BUTCHERED brings the destruction right back to where it starts.<\/p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s time for governments to step in, hold fossil fuel giants to account and make them pay for the enormous damage they\u2019re causing.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is the first time that a fine art piece has been installed on an active fossil fuel platform anywhere in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BUTCHERED by Anish Kapoor | A Greenpeace film\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f05hovAuCt4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why we took action&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Climate chaos is escalating.<\/strong> This year alone, we\u2019ve seen dangerous <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/video\/drought-declared-as-uk-sees-driest-start-to-a-year-since-1976-13410651\">droughts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-record-uk-wildfires-have-burned-an-area-twice-the-size-of-glasgow-in-2025\/\">fires<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneysupermarket.com\/news\/uk-home-high-flood-risk\/\">floods<\/a> in the UK and around the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shell is fueling it. <\/strong>They\u2019ve already caused at least <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2025-04-world-biggest-companies-trillion-climate.html\">$1.42 trillion in climate damage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shell is planning 700 new oil and gas fields.<\/strong> They would unleash 10.8 billion tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere \u2014 enough to blow 5% of the world\u2019s remaining carbon budget.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The oil industry has known about climate change since 1959.<\/strong> Instead of raising the alarm, <a href=\"https:\/\/commonhome.georgetown.edu\/topics\/climateenergy\/defense-denial-and-disinformation-uncovering-the-oil-industrys-early-knowledge-of-climate-change\/\">they chose lies, denial, and delay<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oil giants like Shell have made billions from climate destruction. <\/strong>\u00a354bn in profits since the war in Ukraine \u2014 and just \u00a31.2bn paid in UK tax.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>They won\u2019t stop by themselves. In 2019, he joined other artists in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/05\/arts\/bp-sponsorship-national-portrait-gallery.html\">calling<\/a> on London\u2019s National Portrait Gallery to cut ties with oil giant BP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>He is the latest figure to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/the-polluters-pay-pact\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/the-polluters-pay-pact\/\">Polluters Pay Pact<\/a>, a global Greenpeace initiative backed by firefighters, political leaders, unions, humanitarian groups and tens of thousands of people, calling on governments to make big polluters pay for the climate damage they\u2019ve caused.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I wanted to make something visual, physical, visceral to reflect the butchery they are inflicting on our planet: a visual scream that gives voice to the calamitous cost of the climate crisis, often on the most marginalised communities across the globe. They\u2019re following industry safety standards.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The \u2018blood\u2019 used to create the work is predominantly made from seawater, combined with beetroot powder, organic decaf instant coffee granules and a biodegradable, food-based pond dye.
