As governments meet in Bel\u00e9m for the UN Climate Conference, COP30 will be a decisive test of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/78784\/climate-change-is-here-world-leaders-must-now-close-the-1-5c-ambition-gap\/\">global commitment to keep the planet within the 1.5\u00b0C limit<\/a>. Taking place in the heart of the Amazon, this COP carries enormous symbolic and political weight. The Amazon is not only the world\u2019s largest tropical forest but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/73667\/10-reasons-why-we-need-to-act-for-the-amazon\/\">one of the most important climate regulators<\/a>. Rainforest protection is essential to limit global heating and preserve life on Earth.<\/p>\n\n<p>At COP30, Greenpeace is calling on governments to turn promises into action through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/79199\/greenpeace-calls-pre-cop-talks-set-stage-forest-climate-action\/?_gl=1*imbzhy*_up*MQ..*_ga*OTUwOTE5MDU0LjE3NjEwMjYzMjU.*_ga_94MRTN8HG4*czE3NjEwMjYzMjUkbzEkZzAkdDE3NjEwMjYzMjUkajYwJGwwJGg2MDMyNDU4MDE.\">an ambitious forest and climate agenda<\/a> that puts people, justice, and the planet first. Here\u2019s what we are fighting for in Bel\u00e9m and beyond.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. A global forest action plan to end deforestation and ecosystem collapse<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/75584\/urgent-action-needed-sb62-amazon-climate-slip-closer-tipping-points\/\">Amazon and other critical ecosystems are reaching tipping points<\/a> that could trigger irreversible climate disruption. Greenpeace is demanding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/79160\/cop30-act-new-greenpeace-poll-nine-10-people-forest-protection-fight-climate-change\/\">global forest action plan to end deforestation and degradation by 2030<\/a> at the latest. A robust response to the 1.5\u00b0C ambition gap, including a fast and fair transition away from fossil fuels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/emissions-gap-report-2025\">Emissions Gap Report from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/a> finds that new national climate pledges under the Paris Agreement have only slightly lowered projected temperature rise this century \u2014 leaving the world on track for around 2.3\u20132.5\u00b0C of warming. The report compares countries\u2019 commitments with what\u2019s needed to stay below the 1.5\u00b0C limit, based on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs, the official emission-reduction plans each country submits under the Paris Agreement).<br><br>The fossil fuel industry is the main driver of the climate crisis. Around the world, communities are facing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/78866\/photos-impact-of-super-typhoon-ragasa\/?_gl=1*fx0e68*_up*MQ..*_ga*OTQ3NzY1OTcuMTc2MTIxMDc1MA..*_ga_94MRTN8HG4*czE3NjEyMTA3NTAkbzEkZzAkdDE3NjEyMTA3NTAkajYwJGwwJGg5NTA3NTIwNjc.\">escalating wave of extreme weather disasters<\/a>, including longer heatwaves, record floods, devastating storms and uncontrolled wildfires. At COP30, Greenpeace is calling on governments to commit to a Global Response Plan to ramp up climate action and to outline clear plans to transition away from fossil fuels as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/74157\/greenpeace-comment-joint-leaders-session-climate-just-transition\/?_gl=1*p3d4c7*_up*MQ..*_ga*OTQyNjI3MjY4LjE3NjEyOTU0MDU.*_ga_94MRTN8HG4*czE3NjEyOTU0MDUkbzEkZzAkdDE3NjEyOTU0MDkkajU2JGwwJGg0OTgyMTc2OTc.\">just transition<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace rejects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/71284\/trading-carbon-offsets-save-planet-time-real-climate-solutions\/\">false solutions such as carbon offsets, carbon capture and storage (CCS) or \u201cnet zero\u201d loopholes<\/a> that allow polluters to delay real emission cuts. Real solutions already exist and the <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/76ad6eac-2aa6-4c55-9a55-b8dc0dba9f9e\/Renewables2025.pdf\">clean energy transition is making progress<\/a>. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities are also implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/75975\/amazon-guardians-a-living-example-of-real-solutions\/\">successful climate and biodiversity initiatives<\/a>, rooted in traditional knowledge and community governance.<\/p>\n\n<p>The only way to respect the 1.5\u00b0C limit is through deep, rapid and equitable reductions in fossil fuel use, ending deforestation and ecosystem loss and by ensuring Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities\u2019 rights are guaranteed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/78771\/forests-brink-world-leaders-protect-cop30\/\">their solutions are supported<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Climate finance and accountability: make polluters pay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis are suffering devastating impacts while major polluters continue to profit. Climate justice requires that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/75582\/global-survey-finds-8-out-of-10-people-support-taxing-oil-and-gas-corporations-to-pay-for-climate-damages\/?_gl=1*mchben*_up*MQ..*_ga*OTk5MzQ0NTcxLjE3NjEyMTAyOTc.*_ga_94MRTN8HG4*czE3NjEyMTAyOTckbzEkZzAkdDE3NjEyMTAyOTckajYwJGwwJGg3NzcxNDAzMDY.\">those most responsible pay their fair share<\/a> \u2013 from <a href=\"https:\/\/act-int.greenpeace.org\/polluters-pay-pact?_gl=1*smpqe5*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTg1ODcwMTU0LjE3NjE4ODU2MTA.*_ga_94MRTN8HG4*czE3NjE4ODU2MTAkbzEkZzAkdDE3NjE4ODY4MDEkajYwJGwwJGg1NjQyNzkzNDM.\">oil and gas corporations<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/tax-the-super-rich\/\">billionaires<\/a>. Greenpeace is calling for new and additional public climate finance for adaptation, emission reduction, and to address loss and damage. Wealthy developed nations must finally deliver on their long-promised financial commitments under the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace also demands accountability from fossil fuel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/78903\/greenpeace-activists-cages-confront-un-livestock-conference-fao-just-transition-industrial-agriculture\/\">agribusiness corporations<\/a> whose emissions are driving the crisis. Governments must introduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/74239\/a-multi-billion-dollar-question-what-good-can-come-from-taxing-oil-and-gas-corporations-for-climate-damages\/\">taxes on corporate polluters<\/a> to fund recovery efforts and climate solutions.<\/p>\n\n<p>The money is there. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/71322\/tax-big-oil-grow-un-climate-loss-damage-fund-2000-analysis\/\">A small tax on just seven of the world\u2019s biggest oil and gas companies<\/a> for example could grow the UN fund for responding to loss and damage by more than 2000% and help address the costs of extreme weather events. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/79405\/billionaire-tax-1-trillion-elon-musk-pay-packet\/\">fair tax on billionaires\u2019 extreme wealth<\/a> could fund flood prevention, clean air, green cities, affordable housing, and nature protection.<\/p>\n\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/64386\/cop28-signal-fossil-fuel-industry\/\">Loss and Damage Fund agreed at COP28<\/a> must now become fully operational and properly financed at COP30, while funding for adaptation must be significantly increased. At COP30, Greenpeace will work alongside Indigenous leaders to call for that recognition and for stronger protection from violence and persecution.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A turning point for people and planet<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>COP30 must deliver a breakthrough that unites climate and forest action. It is the moment for governments to commit to ending deforestation, phasing out fossil fuels, ensuring climate finance, and protecting those who defend life on Earth.<\/p>\n\n<p>From Bel\u00e9m to the world, Greenpeace will continue to push for a liveable planet where justice, biodiversity and climate stability prevail.
