After five\u00a0 years working as an environmental journalist in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, I had reached a point of mental and emotional exhaustion. Along my recovery journey, which took me many years, I&#8217;ve finally learned the basics: caring for myself is more important than the mission I&#8217;ve embraced. More important? Yes. Sharing with like minded groups was nurturing and helped put us back on track with an increased sense of hope and joy.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Get support from healers, coaches and therapists<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The recovery was a journey of self-discovery where I learned a lot about boundaries, recognising when my body tells me to take a deep breath and to relax my mind, so I could be in touch again with the beautiful possibility of reinventing myself to never stop being an activist &#8211; here I am.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Establish a rhythm of studying<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p>I studied things that helped me to find ways of action focused on love, education and inspiration, like <a href=\"https:\/\/deepecology.net\/\">Deep Ecology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/workthatreconnects.org\/what-is-the-work-that-reconnects\/\">The Work that Reconnects<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ao_PzXvEx_M\">Systems Thinking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LSGfqyhleUA\">Non-Violent Communication<\/a>, Delicate Activism and more.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong>Ask for advice from experienced people&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2025\/06\/cd005756-gp0su4wgj-1024x683.jpg\" title=\"Kathy Joel at 40th Anniversary of Operation Exodus in Marshall Islands. \u00a9 Greenpeace \/ Chewy C. Stephan would tell me: &#8220;Remember to balance emotion and intuition with thinking and logic in your work.\u201d Joanna\u2019s advice: \u201cAre you in distress? Use it!&#8221; taught me to see this emotion as part of my power to change things. Satish\u2019s words : \u201cCreate your own way&#8221;, emboldened me to trust my creativity to find new ways of being an environmentalist while Antonio\u2019s: \u201cYou don&#8217;t have to live in the Amazon to protect it\u201d was liberating.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. <strong>Talk with activists friends<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to have people around you who could truly understand each other\u2019s experience. When things got hard or great again, we weren&#8217;t alone.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <strong>Take care of my health in systemic ways<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Body, mind, emotions, soul &#8211; I became more attentive to my health as a whole.
