Disruption to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/81999\/hormuz-oil-tanker-leak-iran\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/81999\/hormuz-oil-tanker-leak-iran\/\">shipping through the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> has caused oil and gas prices to surge, and the effects are sparking chaos across the world: higher transport costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/82244\/iran-fertiliser-prices-agribusiness-food-crisis-corporate-handout\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/82244\/iran-fertiliser-prices-agribusiness-food-crisis-corporate-handout\/\">rising food prices<\/a>, and more expensive heating and electricity. This is a structural flaw of the fossil fuel system that political leaders need to face.<\/p>\n\n<p>Fossil fuels are traded globally, but are controlled by a small number of states or corporations with the power to shape supply and price. When conflict erupts, when infrastructure is damaged, or when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/80551\/greenpeace-international-protection-venezuelan-people-amid-oil-driven-us-intervention\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/80551\/greenpeace-international-protection-venezuelan-people-amid-oil-driven-us-intervention\/\">geopolitical tensions rise<\/a>, the entire system shudders. The consequences are felt far beyond the point of conflict, landing hardest on households and communities.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/47944\/oil-companies-rake-in-e81-4-million-extra-daily-in-the-eu-as-fuel-prices-soar\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/47944\/oil-companies-rake-in-e81-4-million-extra-daily-in-the-eu-as-fuel-prices-soar\/\">Oil and gas corporations benefit from this instability<\/a> and post enormous wartime profits, while families pay more for essentials like transport, food and energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>This is happening in addition to another growing cost: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/82686\/climate-emergencies-photos-of-2026-so-far\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/82686\/climate-emergencies-photos-of-2026-so-far\/\">the toll of climate-driven extreme weather<\/a>, where communities are already paying for fossil fuel dependence through damaged homes and disrupted livelihoods. Now they are paying again through higher energy prices.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Santa Marta can unlock renewable energy transition<\/h2>\n\n<p>This is why Santa Marta is vital. It is the <a href=\"https:\/\/transitionawayconference.com\/\">First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels<\/a> and will bring together a broad coalition of committed countries ready to move beyond fossil fuels and can be a key turning point towards a clean energy future.<br><br>More than 50 countries are set to attend, reinforcing what emerged at last year\u2019s UN climate talks (COP30) in Belem, Brazil: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/79935\/climate-forest-protection-roadmaps-slashed-cop30-outcome-people-demand-change\/\">many governments are willing to move ahead on the transition<\/a> and leave behind those clinging to fossil fuels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>But this shift&nbsp; is not just about cutting emissions. Wind and solar are produced locally, and do not rely on shipping routes that can be blocked. They are not priced on volatile global markets. And once built, they provide energy at predictable and increasingly low cost.<\/p>\n\n<p>Electrification backed by renewables, reduces dependence on imported fuels, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/82741\/iran-war-china-clean-energy-fossil-fuel-price-shocks\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/82741\/iran-war-china-clean-energy-fossil-fuel-price-shocks\/\">stabilises prices and strengthens energy sovereignty<\/a>. In a world defined by uncertainty, that is not just a climate solution, but an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/81935\/war-renewables-security-imperative-energy-mena-west-asia\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/81935\/war-renewables-security-imperative-energy-mena-west-asia\/\">economic and security strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activists urge governments to end fossil fuels\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n<p>In the lead-up to Santa Marta, campaigners and communities have been mobilising around the world to demand an end to fossil fuel dependence and a just transition to renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n<p>In Madrid, Greenpeace Spain activists called on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to lead a roadmap to end Spain\u2019s reliance on petrostates, and called out US President Donald Trump, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/82861\/spain-activists-trump-figure-vomiting-oil-call-for-no-oil-no-war-ahead-santa-marta-fossil-fuel-phase-out-meeting\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/82861\/spain-activists-trump-figure-vomiting-oil-call-for-no-oil-no-war-ahead-santa-marta-fossil-fuel-phase-out-meeting\/\">giant image of president Trump spewing oil into a fountain<\/a>, staining the water black. Renewable energy offers a path away from all three.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Nordic and partner organisations held a pre-conference gathering in Norway, bringing together civil society voices to push for stronger commitments and clearer timelines ahead of the Santa Marta conference.<\/p>\n\n<p>And the activities and demonstrations won\u2019t end there. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/82831\/governments-must-seize-energy-crisis-as-pivotal-moment-to-end-fossil-fuels\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/82831\/governments-must-seize-energy-crisis-as-pivotal-moment-to-end-fossil-fuels\/\">Europe <\/a>to the Pacific, people are aligning around a shared goal to phase out fossil fuels and replace them with systems that are cleaner, fairer and more secure.<\/p>\n\n<p>That demand is increasingly backed by evidence and lived experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Governments heading to Santa Marta face a choice: They can continue dealing with the fallout of a system punctuated by crises, or they can start phasing out fossil fuels in a fair, deliberate, funded and coordinated way.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What governments must do to enable a just transition<\/h2>\n\n<p>That means setting concrete and ambitious timelines to end fossil fuel extraction and use, removing barriers to renewable energy deployment, while preventing further extractivism and petrochemical expansion, and ensuring the rights and voices of affected workers, communities and countries are safeguarded in the process.<\/p>\n\n<p>It also means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/campaigns\/polluters-pay-pact\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/campaigns\/polluters-pay-pact\/\">holding polluters to account<\/a>. Coal, oil and gas corporations have profited from a system that drives climate breakdown and economic instability. Renewable energy systems are already delivering cheaper, more stable and more secure power in the countries that are investing in them.<\/p>\n\n<p>The direction is clear.
