The UNGA will be complemented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateweeknyc.org\/\">New York Climate Week<\/a> (NYCW) \u2013 which runs from 20-27 September.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outgoing UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres is expected to make climate a central part of his legacy, declaring <a href=\"https:\/\/theclimatewatch.com\/81st-un-general-assembly-session\/\">&#8220;the world stands at a juncture where joint leadership, not division, can save the planet.&#8221;<\/a><br><br>Guterres will host a High-Level Event on Climate Action and the Just Transition \u2013 a summit that comes after the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a groundbreaking report declaring the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/limiting-overshoot-navigating-exceedance\">will overshoot the 1.5\u00b0C global warming threshold within the next few years<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overshooting 1.5\u00b0C \u2013 a limit leaders committed to pursuing in the Paris Agreement \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/85664\/why-the-unep-1-5c-overshoot-report-must-be-an-urgent-call-to-action-on-climate-change\/\">will worsen extreme weather impacts and intensify the risks of climate change<\/a>.
