Greenpeace Japan announces new Executive Director

Tokyo, 25 August 2016 _ Greenpeace Japan today announced that Yuko Yoneda has officially taken up the role as the new Executive Director as of 22 August. Yoneda comes with 17 years\u2019 experience in international development, working with different NGOs in Asia and Africa, including Plan, Save the Children, and Oxfam. She played various roles, such as strengthening civil society in war-torn Somalia, working with remote ethnic communities to protect their land, forest and livelihoods in Cambodia, supporting Ebola affected children and their families in Liberia, and encouraging hygiene and sanitation in rural communities in Laos.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we are to make social, economic and political changes happen that are needed to protect the environment, we need to critically re-examine our relationships with nature, question and challenge our way of life and our underlying values. It\u2019s powerful when people have conviction and take actions to address issues that are important to them. I believe in the power of grassroots action and solidarity,\u201d said Yoneda.<\/p>\n

\u201cBuilding on Greenpeace Japan\u2019s past experiences and achievements, we would like to further strengthen its foundation. Specifically, we think it is important that Greenpeace Japan clearly articulate its identity and distinct perspective as a Japanese civil society organization as well as a global environmental organization. We would also like to strengthen Greenpeace Japan\u2019s support base by building long-term, deeper engagement with our constituencies. However, Greenpeace alone cannot achieve significant, sustainable impact on the environment. We are looking forward to working in partnerships with Japanese civil society and with other offices in Greenpeace to scale up the impact of local actions at the national, regional and global levels,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
