Dear Mr Blair,

We\/I am writing to you to express grave concern at the most recent of a series of draconian legal and financial measures taken by the British Government, and the state-owned company British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL), to suppress the freedom of international anti-nuclear activists expressing their opposition to a shipment of plutonium (MOX) fuel bound for Japan.

We\/I regard the freezing of Greenpeace International’s bank account by BNFL on July 20th as completely unacceptable. We\/I urge BNFL to reverse this action and withdraw all other legal proceedings against Greenpeace immediately.

The combined cargo of the Pacific Teal and the Pacific Pintail, the vessels transporting the plutonium fuel contains enough weapons useable plutonium to make 60 nuclear bombs and poses a serious threat to non-proliferation and to the environment. Governments and citizens’ groups around the world have opposed this shipment, and Greenpeace has been peacefully protesting at shipment’s departure for Japan. I\/We fully supports Greenpeace’s right to protest at this shipment, and join them in their call for an end to this dangerous trade.

I\/we would like to lodge our strong protest at the repressive actions of BNFL and the British Government. I\/We do not believe that an organisation, peacefully protesting against the destructive and proliferatory activities of the nuclear industry, should be gagged or intimidated by financial and legal measures.

I respectfully request that you urgently rescind the decision to obtain a freeze on G\nreenpeace International’s bank account, and drop all legal proceedings against Greenpeace.
