법무부에 보낸 그린피스 서한

친애하는 권재진 장관님,

제목: 그린피스 직원 3명[1]의 입국거부 건과 관련한 긴급 면담요청 

세계 41개국에 사무소를 두고 있는 세계 최대 환경단체인 그린피스는 지구상의 사람들과 환경을 보호하기 위해 비폭력 캠페인만을 추구하는 평화로운 단체입니다.

그린피스의 국제 사무총장인 본인은 오늘 오후 인천공항에서 저와 함께 동행입국한 세 명의 그린피스 직원들이 세계적인 민주주의 국가로 여겨졌던 대한민국에서 입국거부로 추방당한다는 사실에 개인적으로 경악을 금하지 않을 수 없었습니다.

저의 이번 방한 목적은 이미 지난 3월 20일자 그린피스의 보도자료에서 명확하게 밝힌 것처럼 그린피스 함선인 “에스페란자”호의 “희망에너지투어”를 홍보하고 정부 관계자, 정당 대표 및 시민사회단체 대표들을 만나 그린피스의 대한민국의 재생가능한 에너지에 대한 전망보고서와 한국 및 세계적으로 진행하고 있는 반핵 캠페인을 홍보하기 위함입니다.

대한민국에서 평화적인 활동을 하였던 그린피스 직원들을 추방한 것은 대의민주주의의 원칙에 위반되는 것이며 국제 기후변화 및 환경보호 회의의 주요 참여국인 대한민국이 국제사회에서 추구하는 이미지를 심각하게 실추시키는 행위입니다.

이에 이번 입국거부 사건과 관련하여 장관님과의 긴급 면담을 요청합니다. 장관님께서 가능한 시간에 면담가능여부를 알려주시기 바랍니다.

Request for Meeting regarding the Deportation of three Greenpeace Staff ([1]) 

Greenpeace, an international environment NGO with a presence in over 41 countries, is a peaceful organisation that only engages in non-violent campaigns for the better protection of the people and the environment.

As the Executive Director of Greenpeace International, I was personally shocked this afternoon upon arrival at Incheon International Airport to find that three senior staff accompanying me to Korea were refused entry at immigration and deported from what is supposed to be a first world democratic country.

Greenpeace has been completely transparent regarding the purpose of my visit, which is to promote the visit of Greenpeace vessel Esperanza’s “Energy Hope Tour” and to meet with government officials, political leaders, and prominent members of civil society to promote our renewable energy vision for Korea and explore collaboration on Greenpeace’s domestic and global nuclear campaign.

Deporting Greenpeace staff engaged in peaceful activities in Korea goes against the principles of representative democracy, and severely undermines the image Korea is attempting to portray to the international community – that it is an active international player in climate talks and environmental protection.
