Palm\u00f6lh\u00e4ndler Wilmar k\u00fcndigt weitreichende Ma\u00dfnahmen zum Regenwaldschutz an\b<\/h2>\n

Palm\u00f6l des Konzerns Wilmar steckt in etlichen S\u00fc\u00dfigkeiten. In Zukunft will das Unternehmen garantieren k\u00f6nnen, dass seine Ware nicht aus Regenwaldzerst\u00f6rung stammt \u2013 dank Technik.<\/p>\n

\"Gesch\u00e4tzt

Gesch\u00e4tzt wird, dass es heute noch zwischen 70.000 und 100.000 Orang-Utans gibt. Zur Jahrtausendwende waren es noch etwa 150.000 mehr. Der Schwund ist eine Folge der Gier nach Palm\u00f6l, f\u00fcr dessen Anbau Lebensr\u00e4ume zerst\u00f6rt werden.<\/p><\/div>\n

Palm\u00f6l steckt in unz\u00e4hligen Alltagswaren: in Keksen, Fertigpizza und Schokolade, in Shampoo und Lippenstift \u2013 letztlich\u00a0in etwa jedem zweiten Produkt, das man im Supermarkt kaufen kann<\/a>.\u00a0Der Bedarf an dem Pflanzenfett ist hoch \u2013 es l\u00e4sst sich unkompliziert anbauen und ist vielseitig einsetzbar. Au\u00dfer in der Lebensmittelindustrie wird es zum Beispiel auch zur Herstellung von Treibstoff genutzt.<\/p>\n

Palm\u00f6l an sich ist nicht \u201eschlecht\u201c, die \u00d6lpalme k\u00f6nnte wie jede andere Pflanze nach \u00f6kologischen und sozialen Standards angebaut werden. Die Anbaubedingungen sind jedoch h\u00e4ufig katastrophal: Regenwald wird daf\u00fcr illegal abgeholzt, vielerorts werden Torfmoore trockengelegt, was insbesondere in Indonesien\u00a0allj\u00e4hrlich zu schweren Fl\u00e4chenbr\u00e4nden f\u00fchrt<\/a>. Der weltgr\u00f6\u00dfte Palm\u00f6lh\u00e4ndler Wilmar hat nun auf die anhaltende Kritik von Umweltsch\u00fctzern reagiert und einen detaillierten Aktionsplan ver\u00f6ffentlicht, wie er gegen die Waldzerst\u00f6rung seiner Zulieferer in Indonesien und Malaysia vorgehen will.<\/p>\n

Mit Satelliten gegen Umwelts\u00fcnder<\/h3>\n

Bis Ende 2019, so der Plan, will Wilmar mit Satellitenbildern l\u00fcckenlos nachvollziehen k\u00f6nnen, woher sein Palm\u00f6l stammt und ob seine Zulieferer weiterhin Regenwald zerst\u00f6ren. Abholzung w\u00fcrde damit endlich ein Riegel vorgeschoben. \u201eEin potenzieller Durchbruch<\/em>\u201c, sagt Kiki Taufik von Greenpeace S\u00fcdostasien. \u201eJetzt m\u00fcssen andere H\u00e4ndler und Marken folgen. Es braucht eine industrieweite Anstrengung, um die Abholzung zu stoppen.<\/em>\u201c Der Marktf\u00fchrer zieht schon mal mit: Wilmar liefert 40 Prozent des weltweit gehandelten Palm\u00f6ls. Fett von Wilmar steckt zum Beispiel in den Produkten des S\u00fc\u00dfwarenfabrikanten Mondelez, dazu geh\u00f6ren Marken wie Oreo, Milka oder Toblerone.<\/p>\n

Entsprechend hoch ist die Verantwortung des Konzerns: Erst im November hat ein Report von Greenpeace International gezeigt, dass 22 Wilmar-Zulieferer zwischen 2015 und 2017\u00a0rund 70.000 Hektar Regenwald<\/a>\u00a0abgeholzt haben. Das hat schwerwiegende Folgen f\u00fcr die Tierwelt. In \u00fcber einem Drittel des zerst\u00f6rten Waldes waren Orang-Utans zuhause \u2013 die Menschenaffenart ist vom Aussterben bedroht.<\/p>\n

Echte Chance f\u00fcr Verbesserung<\/h3>\n

Seit 2007 arbeitet Greenpeace gegen die Waldzerst\u00f6rung f\u00fcr den Palm\u00f6lanbau. Die Umweltschutzorganisation ver\u00f6ffentlicht regelm\u00e4\u00dfig Berichte, die\u00a0das schmutzige Gesch\u00e4ft mit dem Rohstoff<\/a>\u00a0offenlegen, und richtet ihren Protest an Politik und Wirtschaft.<\/p>\n

Das hatte Folgen. 2013 war Wilmar der erste Palm\u00f6lh\u00e4ndler, der sich dazu verpflichtete, Palm\u00f6l aus Regenwaldzerst\u00f6rung aus seiner Lieferkette zu verbannen ; bis Ende 2014 bekannten sich s\u00e4mtliche Mitbewerber zu vergleichbaren Richtlinien. Wirkliche Verbesserung brachte das allerdings nicht. Das Problem ist, dass H\u00e4ndler bislang nur bedingt ihre Zulieferer kontrollieren konnten, die f\u00fcr Palm\u00f6l mitunter weiterhin Regenwald abholzen. Mit den weitreichenden Kontrollma\u00dfnahmen von Wilmar w\u00fcrde sich das jetzt \u00e4ndern. In den kommenden Monaten und Jahren wird Greenpeace beobachten, ob der Marktf\u00fchrer sein Versprechen h\u00e4lt \u2013 und der Regenwald endlich vor weiterer Zerst\u00f6rung gesch\u00fctzt wird.<\/p>\n
