Stockholm \/ Bucharest, 11 avril 2024<\/strong> \u2013 En r\u00e9ponse au rapport de Greenpeace Europe Centrale et de l\u2019Est (ECE) publi\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment et intitul\u00e9 \u201cAssemble the truth: Old-growth forest destruction in the Romanian Carpathians\u201d<\/em><\/a>, IKEA s\u2019efforce de semer le doute sur les conclusions du rapport dans les m\u00e9dias [1] \u00e0 travers des d\u00e9clarations que l\u2019organisation estime maladroites, pour ne pas dire trompeuses, et esp\u00e8re toujours que le g\u00e9ant de l\u2019ameublement fera le m\u00e9nage dans sa cha\u00eene d\u2019approvisionnement et se fera le champion d\u2019une meilleure protection des for\u00eats.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Pour Martina Holbach, charg\u00e9e de campagne pour Greenpeace Luxembourg, \u00ab notre enqu\u00eate a prouv\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re solide que les prestataires d\u2019IKEA, qui fabriquent certains de ses produits les plus populaires, sont impliqu\u00e9\u00b7es dans la destruction de for\u00eats primaires en Roumanie. S\u2019il est vrai que ces activit\u00e9s ne sont pas ill\u00e9gales, cela ne les rend pas durables pour autant, ce qu\u2019IKEA tient \u00e0 faire croire<\/em> \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n

L\u2019ensemble des sites forestiers exploit\u00e9s par les prestataires d\u2019IKEA et analys\u00e9s par Greenpeace ont \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9s comme des for\u00eats primaires, non seulement en raison de leur \u00e2ge moyen, tel qu\u2019il figure dans les plans de gestion accessibles au public, mais aussi en raison de leur composition \u00e9cologique unique et diversifi\u00e9e : les \u00e9quipes sur place ont en effet constat\u00e9 que toutes les zones pr\u00e9sentaient des \u00e9l\u00e9ments caract\u00e9ristiques des for\u00eats primaires, comme la complexit\u00e9 structurelle et la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019arbres de tailles, de formes et d\u2019esp\u00e8ces vari\u00e9es, ainsi que la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019arbres habit\u00e9s, de bois mort couch\u00e9 ou sur pied et, enfin, la possibilit\u00e9 de procurer de nombreux bienfaits \u00e9cologiques et \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques. <\/p>\n\n

Comme l\u2019a montr\u00e9 le rapport de Greenpeace ECE, le syst\u00e8me de certification FSC ne reconna\u00eet pas toujours les for\u00eats primaires pour leur v\u00e9ritable valeur en termes de biodiversit\u00e9, ce qui permet \u00e0 l\u2019industrie ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 certaines pratiques d\u2019exploitation foresti\u00e8re d’\u00eatre certifi\u00e9es FSC, y compris dans des zones qui devraient \u00eatre strictement prot\u00e9g\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n

\u00ab Se cacher derri\u00e8re un syst\u00e8me de certification qui ne parvient manifestement pas \u00e0 prot\u00e9ger les for\u00eats primaires n’est pas la solution. Nous demandons \u00e0 IKEA d\u2019assainir sa cha\u00eene d’approvisionnement d\u2019une part, mais aussi de plaider publiquement et d\u2019encourager nos responsables politiques \u00e0 mettre en \u0153uvre concr\u00e8tement les engagements de l’Union europ\u00e9enne en mati\u00e8re de biodiversit\u00e9, ce qui devrait garantir la pr\u00e9servation des derni\u00e8res for\u00eats primaires en Europe. IKEA ne doit pas s\u2019enliser dans la destruction de tr\u00e9sors de biodiversit\u00e9, mais au contraire devenir le fer de lance de la protection de la nature \u00bb<\/em>, conclut Martina Holbach.<\/p>\n\n

Seven furniture manufacturers were found to be sourcing wood from forests worthy of protection. Based on publicly available information, IKEA is the largest customer of the products manufactured by most of these companies. So far, companies and authorities have tried to avoid identifying areas as primary or virgin forests in order to circumvent logging restrictions. As a result, only about 2.4% (1700 km2) of Romania's Carpathian forests are currently protected from deforestation. For the research, Greenpeace teams traced the path of the wood from the forests of Romania to the shelves of IKEA stores using logging permits, satellite images and timber warehouses. Seven furniture manufacturers were found to be sourcing wood from forests worthy of protection. Based on publicly available information, IKEA is the largest customer of the products manufactured by most of these companies. So far, companies and authorities have tried to avoid identifying areas as primary or virgin forests in order to circumvent logging restrictions. As a result, only about 2.4% (1700 km2) of Romania's Carpathian forests are currently protected from deforestation. However, the European biodiversity strategy provides for old, semi-natural forests and primeval forests in particular to be placed under strict protection.
