Protect Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve

Following the public hearing session at the end of September 2020, a combination of NGOs, named PHSKLU or Pertahankan Hutan Simpan Kuala Langat Utara, was formed consisting of various individuals and groups to mobilise civil society efforts to defend the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve from degazettement by the Selangor State Government.

The Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLNFR) was gazetted in the early 1920s, but has shrunk by 97% of its original size. KLNFR is a peat swamp forest that has the unique biodiversity and important ecosystem functions for the people around Banting and Kuala Langat.

More importantly, this forest is also a customary land for the Temuan community whose customs and life depend on this forest for more than 120 years. The loss of this forest is not only a violation of human rights in terms of land rights, but also the right to live in a clean and safe environment.

Phase 2 started with sending emails to Selangor’s MB and EXCO members to urge them to remove any current and future plans to degazette KLNFR.

Now that the Selangor Government has announced it has revoked the secretive decision to degazette our beloved forest reserve, we await the actual regazettement of Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve.
