{"id":3047,"date":"2019-11-11T16:20:10","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T08:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/malaysia\/?p=3047"},"modified":"2025-03-26T13:21:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T05:21:57","slug":"nestle-switch-to-paper-straws-in-malaysia-and-indonesia-is-not-a-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/malaysia\/press\/3047\/nestle-switch-to-paper-straws-in-malaysia-and-indonesia-is-not-a-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"Nestl\u00e9 switch to paper straws in Malaysia and Indonesia is not a solution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Press Statement&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>For Immediate Release<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>November 11, 2019&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Nestl\u00e9 to switch to paper straws for UHT drinks in Malaysia and Indonesia<\/strong> <strong>is<\/strong> <strong>not a solution.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia <\/strong>&#8211;<strong> <\/strong>Nestl\u00e9 Malaysia and Indonesia have opted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator-asia.com\/Article\/2019\/11\/11\/Straw-revolution-Nestle-Malaysia-and-Indonesia-roll-out-paper-straws-for-UHT-drinks\">exchange plastic straws for paper straws<\/a> on UHT drinks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>In response, Greenpeace Malaysia Campaigner Heng Kiah Chun said:<br>\u201cMultinational companies like Nestl\u00e9, whose impact is widespread, need to address the root of the plastics crisis &#8212; single-use products and throw-away culture.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Shifting from plastic to paper is not a viable solution. Southeast Asia urgently needs Nestl\u00e9 to proactively address this problem at the root and put forward ambitious targets for plastic reduction, by reassessing their delivery systems based on reuse and refill if they want to tackle this crisis.<br><br>&#8220;Plastic straws to paper straws is a superficial response. And this quick plastic-to-paper switch is worrying, especially coming from a region that is already heavily logged and has faced widespread forest destruction this year.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cGiven Malaysia&#8217;s very low recycling rate, we wonder how and why Nestl\u00e9 thinks this is a long-term solution into the waste crisis that they have helped create in the first place.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Indonesia Urban Campaigner, Muharram Atha Rasyadi said:<br>\u201cNestl\u00e9&#8217;s policy change from plastic straws to paper straws is a misguided solution. We can see that the policy will drive up paper demand, increase land clearing, and fuel deforestation. Indonesia needs Nestl\u00e9 to implement a circular economy and apply reuse and refill concepts. Unilever already has a bulstore refill pilot project.
