The same waters that once breathed life now carry a different cargo to the embracing oceans. There is now a new and toxic rhythm of plastic waste infiltrating our bustling waters.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Grim Reality Along the Klang River<\/h2>\n\n<p>Imagine standing by the Klang River: you\u2019d see everything from discarded plastic bottles to industrial waste floating in its currents.&nbsp; Once a lifeline, it has become Southeast Asia&#8217;s second-largest contributor to plastic pollution in the ocean, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selangormaritimegateway.com\/projects\/river-cleaning\/\">48,485 metric tons of waste collected from the Klang River from February 2016 to May 2019<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/21b894d0-gp0stzuw4_medium-res-1200px-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59677\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/21b894d0-gp0stzuw4_medium-res-1200px-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/21b894d0-gp0stzuw4_medium-res-1200px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/21b894d0-gp0stzuw4_medium-res-1200px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/21b894d0-gp0stzuw4_medium-res-1200px-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/21b894d0-gp0stzuw4_medium-res-1200px.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Floating plastic wastes along a stretch of the Klang River. \u00a9 Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>While there are great efforts and initiatives<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selangormaritimegateway.com\/projects\/river-cleaning\/\"> to revitalise and clean up the Klang River pollution<\/a> by four Municipalities (MBPJ, MBSJ, MBSA and MPK), Greenpeace Malaysia&#8217;s staff, volunteers and donors were defeated by the harsh reality of an overwhelming amount of waste at a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/malaysia\/story\/53045\/klang-river-cleanup-an-uphill-battle\/\"> river cleanup event held in March 2024<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/malaysia\/story\/52040\/common-types-of-plastic-waste-found-at-river-cleanups\/\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/malaysia\/story\/52040\/common-types-of-plastic-waste-found-at-river-cleanups\/\">Although clean-up initiatives are commendable efforts to remove plastic waste<\/a>, they merely address the symptoms of plastic pollution while the production tap is still running.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Dolphin\u2019s Cry for Help<\/h2>\n\n<p>A lonely messenger from the polluted depths emerged &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bloomsicles_\/status\/1780906574846013787\">a dolphin surfaced with a waterlogged plastic bag<\/a> that spoke volumes of our care for the ocean.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This dolphin brought a plastic bag thrown into the ocean to the research Scientists.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/u8HimkWYtc\">pic.twitter.com\/u8HimkWYtc<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Figen (@TheFigen_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheFigen_\/status\/1780706405894525069?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Panning at the ocean in the<a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/25435\/AnnualReport2018_En.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\"> year 2050, there could be more plastic than fish<\/a>. Yet, this phenomenon is not shocking because<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1260352\"> approximately 12 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The plastic debris will break down into small fragments, eventually degrading into micro- and nanoplastics, which plankton, fish, seabirds, turtles and marine mammals ingest.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/metro\/metro-news\/2024\/05\/02\/burdened-with-debris\"> The continuous accumulation of plastic in our oceans disrupts biodiversity, threatens marine species, and compromises the balance of marine ecosystems<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>These plastics are the cause of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/ocean\"> deaths of hundreds of thousands of marine life each year<\/a>, hence highlighting the urgent need to address plastic pollution at its source.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastic on Our Plates: A Hidden Health Threat<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/2e31a426-gp0stpx0b_medium-res-1200px-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/2e31a426-gp0stpx0b_medium-res-1200px-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/2e31a426-gp0stpx0b_medium-res-1200px-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/2e31a426-gp0stpx0b_medium-res-1200px-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/2e31a426-gp0stpx0b_medium-res-1200px-453x340.jpg 453w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-malaysia-stateless\/2024\/11\/2e31a426-gp0stpx0b_medium-res-1200px.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Microplastics found in fish. \u00a9 The 5 Gyres Institute<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Ironically, plastic will reach humans through<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9819327\/\"> seafood<\/a> and raise worrisome health impacts. Microplastics have been found in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160412022001258\"> humans<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/malaysia\/story\/59670\/scientists-reviewed-7000-studies-on-microplastics-their-alarming-conclusion-puts-humanity-on-notice\/\"> science is starting to unveil the long-term effects on human health<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Further, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tyUpgGHuNrY\">Malaysians are found to be consuming approximately 15 grams of microplastics per month<\/a>. There are concerns about the potential health risks of ingesting microplastics, which can carry harmful chemicals like endocrine disruptors or carcinogens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Beacon of Hope: The Global Plastics Treaty<\/h2>\n\n<p>Hope flows amid this crisis.
