As the year comes to a close, we reflect on 2024 with hearts full of hope and gratitude. It has been a transformative year for Greenpeace Malaysia – one that demonstrated the power of collective action and the resilience of our planet when nurtured with care and determination.<\/p>\n\n

Here\u2019s a look back at some of the milestones and stories that defined our journey in 2024. <\/p>\n\n

Championing Climate Actions<\/h2>\n\n

This year, we took bold steps to champion climate actions and advocate for environmental justice. We stood alongside Jaringan Rawang Tolak Insinerator in a protest to challenge harmful waste-to-energy incinerators, amplifying the call for cleaner, greener alternatives. Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n

We also celebrated the launch of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) Report<\/a> on September 27, 2024, reinforcing our commitment to the right to a safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a basic human right.<\/p>\n\n

Alongside the CERAH Anti-Haze Action Coalition, we filed a landmark complaint to SUHAKAM on December 7, 2021, calling for a public inquiry into haze pollution as a human rights violation. This led to a Round Table Discussion on March 11, 2022, where experts and stakeholders developed plans to address both domestic and transboundary haze pollution. Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n

As part of our ongoing advocacy efforts, we also launched the Dove stickering campaign in Malaysia, encouraging consumers to take action for a sustainable future. The pledges collected were sent to Dove Malaysia, amplifying the call for responsible corporate action.<\/p>\n\n

We also supported the release of a powerful film by Greenpeace UK, further reinforcing the global push for urgent climate action and environmental protection. Watch the film<\/a><\/p>\n\n

Actions Start With Dialogues<\/h2>\n\n

This year, we sparked important conversations at key forums, together with diverse voices to lay the groundwork for impactful climate action.<\/p>\n\n

From the launch of the book Malapetaka Iklim: Memahami Fenomena Pemanasan Dunia to discussions at KLIMA Focus Group and the Dialogue Session with CSO, our campaigners consistently engaged with diverse audiences and stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n

Our presence at WE ARE YOUNG, 2024 TEROKA and Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week allowed us to connect with younger generations and different industries, amplifying our message on the urgency of climate action.<\/p>\n\n

These engagements allowed us to amplify our message, educate the public, build new alliances, and further drive the urgency for systemic environmental change.<\/p>\n\n

While we’ve highlighted key forums, our climate engagement this year has been far-reaching. In 2025, we look forward to continuing these dialogues and learning from diverse perspectives as we work toward a greener future.<\/p>\n\n

Standing with Indigenous Communities<\/h2>\n\n

In August, we stood shoulder to shoulder with Orang Asli and Asal in Kelantan to protect Malaysia\u2019s rainforests.<\/p>\n\n

While at the same time to draw political candidates focus for the 2024 Nenggiri by-election to prioritise the resulting critical climate change impacts and the need for stronger forest governance to address these issues.<\/p>\n\n

Alongside this, we are working to develop a community-driven initiative designed to provide a space for knowledge exchange and empowerment.<\/p>\n\n

Built in collaboration with local indigenous communities, the project serves as a gathering where individuals can connect, discuss, and strategise on how to protect their ancestral lands. Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n

Renewable Energy for All<\/h2>\n\n

As an initiative of Ummah for Earth, we installed solar panels at the Sekendi Welfare Home in Sabak Bernam. <\/p>\n\n

This project not only reduced the welfare home’s energy costs but also introduced the children to the importance of renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n

The Journey to End Plastic Pollution<\/h2>\n\n

Challenging cultural norms around our dependence on plastic, we joined forces with the Malaysia Stop Waste Trade Coalition to host the \u2018<\/strong>Journey to End Plastic Pollution\u2019<\/strong> event. Held over three days this October, the event was organised in the run up to the negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty (GPT) as a way to share awareness on the issue.<\/p>\n\n

It featured powerful art installations, film screenings, and storytelling sessions to illuminate the stark realities of plastic pollution.<\/p>\n\n

This event highlighted the urgent need to rethink our reliance on plastic and amplified the coalition\u2019s call for systemic change ahead of the fifth and final Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC5) meeting for a Global Plastics Treaty.<\/p>\n\n

Our campaigners also had the opportunity to meet with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) on our recommendations of how the government can move forward with negotiations on the GPT and reduction in plastic pollution as a whole.<\/p>\n\n

In addition to this, we presented a report<\/a> with several actionable policy recommendations discussed with the ministry during the meeting. Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n

Empowering Supporters Through Activities<\/h2>\n\n

Throughout the year, we organised multiple community activities to inspire and connect with our Greenpeace supporters across Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n

We began the year with a Cleanup in Klang River, mobilising donors and volunteers to raise awareness about the larger issue of plastic pollution.<\/p>\n\n

We also hosted a series of climate action workshops – including Just Transition<\/a>, Before You Eat Movie Screening<\/a>, and Environmental Impact Assessment workshop<\/a> aimed at empowering supporters with the tools and knowledge needed to advocate for change in their communities.<\/p>\n\n

To deepen our supporters’ connection to nature, we organised two Trees for Tomorrow events exclusively for our donors and volunteers. The first event took place in Kuala Lumpur, where donors planted native trees in an urban reforestation effort. Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n

The second event took place in Kota Kinabalu, where donors contributed to mangrove restoration efforts along Sabah\u2019s coastline. Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n

The event symbolised our shared responsibility for the planet and provided an opportunity for donors to witness the tangible impact of their support.<\/p>\n\n

Looking Ahead to 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

As we bid farewell to 2024, we look ahead with optimism. The challenges remain immense, but so does the potential for transformative change. In 2025, we aim to deepen community engagement, advance long-term environmental initiatives, and push for policy reforms that prioritise environmental justice.<\/p>\n\n
